I didn't think the movie Pet Semetary was very scary - partly because of the terrible acting. I did cry when Gage died, though.
However... The book Pet Semetary is a serious, serious head-fuck. Little Gage's death is played over and over again, with the father having a complete breakdown over it... The graphic descriptions of what happens in funeral homes and why they couldn't have an open casket for Gage... The description of the funeral, with the ridiculous "guest book" and the fight that topples the coffin... When the dad digs him up (breaking you out of there, son) and he has to wipe all the moss/ mould off his son's face...
So, so, so disturbing. It wasn't actually any of the supernatural zombie stuff that was particularly disturbing, it was just the detailed description of losing a child... The guilt, the grief, the complete inability to move on... And a complete lack of sappy sentimental stuff, which just leaves me cold personally.
