North Carolina mother has been jailed for the suspicious death of her 8-month-old baby last year.
Katherine Anne Jennings told investigators she fell asleep on the couch with Luke Stephen Phillips face up in her arms, but he never woke up

The medical examiner determined “co-sleeping” was a contributing factor in Luke’s death, but considered it an accident.
Investigators have not elaborated on what led to Jennings’ charge of involuntary manslaughter, but say other parents in similar cases show a dangerous pattern of behavior.

American Academy of Pediatrics says sharing a bed with an infant puts them at risk for sleep-related deaths such as sudden infant death syndrome.
These type of deaths do not typically turn into criminal charges. However, this is the second of Jennings’ children to die this way.
Jennings, who has a 4-year-old daughter, lost her second baby in 2012 after he was suffocated. She fell asleep with her 4-month-old named James Robert Phillips at their Oak Island home

The death was cited as an accident, but it was later changed to undetermined, the newspaper wrote. It’s not known why Jennings was not charged in connection to James’ death.
Her ex-husband was not home during the death of either child because he was on-duty for the Coast Guard.
