A Midland man was recently sentenced to 10 to 15 years in prison for abusing his 1-year-old son.
Ramon Cruz Jackson, 31, was sentenced for second-degree child abuse on Oct. 13. He was also sentenced as a habitual offender
Brooks said that on Dec. 23, 2021, Midland County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a Mills Township address for a 1-year-old male infant who was barely breathing and had apparent traumatic injuries. The child had been in Jackson’s custody for several days. Brooks said deputies also observed the child had severe diaper rash to the point of open wounds. The child’s face was obviously injured, and he had dried blood around his mouth. The child was shaking his head and deputies could see that the child’s eyes were not tracking together, indicating a possible closed head injury.
EMS was called and the infant was rushed to the hospital. After a lengthy hospital stay, the child is expected to make a full recovery.
Jackson’s ex-wife, Danielle, who is not the mother of the boy, said she feels justice wasn’t served. She said Jackson deserves the time in prison for his offenses, but she is 100% against him taking the fall for the child’s injuries. She said the child’s 31-year-old mother, who lost custody of the child after the event, and Child Protective Services should take some of the blame.
According to authorities, the child’s mother left the boy with Jackson for four days while she went to Saginaw. Danielle said her ex-husband didn’t even know the baby was there. He thought the child’s mother had taken him with her. According to the police, when the child’s grandparents showed up, they found both the baby and Jackson in bad shape.
Danielle said she wouldn’t say anything glowing about Jackson but knows in her heart that Jackson, who abused her for eight years, would not hurt a child. She and Jackson have a daughter together.
