A 23-year-old transgender woman was killed by her brother in Iraqi Kurdistan, police have said.

Doski Azad, who was a make-up artist, died in a so-called 'honour killing' when her long-lost brother Chakdar Azad shot her.

Police heard about Ms Azad's death three days later, after receiving a call from a man who identified himself as another brother of the victim.

Ms Azad, who left home more than five years ago, had received multiple threats from her family because of her identity despite establishing her own life as a woman and working in a salon.

Speaking to Rudaw her uncle Dlovan Sadiq said: 'She left the house five to six years ago, I had not seen her ever since. Doski made a mistake.'
The US Consulate General in Erbil, the Iraqi Kurdish capital, yesterday condemned the killing in a statement which read: 'We categorically condemn this violence and the discrimination that is undoubtedly at the root of this crime.

The Kurdistan Regional Government issued today arrest warrants for the suspect of the recent murder of a Trans woman in Duhok.

An official statement said, "On Monday, January 31, 2022, the Duhok Police were notified of a corpse of a trans woman shot dead and left in a village near Duhok."

"Preliminary investigations and statements by family members revealed that Doskey Azad was killed by her brother, and her body was dumped a few days before she was found."

It added, "Duhok Police and the related institutions have immediately launched an investigation. Duhok's Investigation Court issued a warrant to arrest the suspect on the basis of Art 406 from the Iraqi Penal Code, which is pertinent to willful killings."

Security agencies have shared the name of the suspect at all airports and border points, and investigations are ongoing. The suspect, however, fled the country before the corpse of Doski Azad was found.

The suspect left the Kurdistan Region eight years ago and has been living in a European country eversince. He returned to the Kurdistan Region between December 17 and 18 of last year to perpetrate the crime, according to the statement.

I can only hope that this is a poor translation of what he actually said. If not, what exactly was her "mistake"? Living her life authentically instead of living a lie? And since when is a "mistake" worthy of the death penalty?

He was referred to in the article as her "long lost" brother. So her lifestyle had strictly nothing to do with him. This dude was trouble looking for a place to happen and she was just a convenient and, in his view, socially acceptable target for whatever was ailing him.

What is an honour killing?
An honour killing is a murder in the name of honour. If a brother murders his sister to restore family honour, it is an honour killing. According to activists, the most common reasons for honour killings are as the victim:
  • refuses to cooperate in an arranged marriage.
  • wants to end the relationship.
  • was the victim of rape or sexual assault.
  • was accused of having a sexual relationship outside of marriage.
Human rights activists believe that 100,000 honour killings are carried out every year, most of which are not reported to the authorities and some are even deliberately covered up by the authorities themselves, for example because the perpetrators are good friends with local policemen, officials or politicians. Violence against girls and women remains a serious problem in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Serbia and Turkey.

So, the “brother” takes it upon himself to return there from another country to kill her when she is supporting herself and not involving the rest of the family! He should be be shamed in front of the whole world! Hes very dishonorable, he should spend the rest of his life in prison!
