CHIPPEWA FALLS, WIS. — A western Wisconsin pickup truck driver had been "huffing" chemical vapors shortly before he hit and killed three Girl Scouts and one of their parents as they picked up litter Saturday along a western Wisconsin highway, authorities said Monday.

Colten R. Treu, 21, of Chippewa Falls, appeared in court Monday and remains jailed on at least a dozen charges, including four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and four more charges related to him fleeing the scene before he surrendered later Saturday.

Police identified the victims as Jayna S. Kelley, 9, and Autumn A. Helgeson, 10, both of Lake Hallie; and Haylee J. Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, both from Lafayette. Jayna and Autumn attended Halmstad School, and Hickle attended Southview School, a district spokeswoman said.

A 10-year-old girl remains hospitalized in stable condition. Her identity has yet to be disclosed.

Two girls and the mother were dead at the scene. Two other girls were taken by ground and air ambulances to a hospital, where one of them died later Saturday. The other girl was initially reported to be in critical condition and later listed in stable condition.

Treu was speeding north on County Road P in his pickup when it veered over the centerline and into a shallow ditch where some of the fourth-graders and the mother were collecting litter as part of an "Adopt-A-Highway" group of 12 walking along both sides of the road, according to police and witnesses.

District Attorney Wade Newell said during Monday's hearing that Treu and a passenger had bought dusting aerosol cleaner that morning at a nearby Walmart, and Treu "was somewhat out of it."

The passenger noticed the pickup was drifting, started arguing with Treu and grabbed the steering wheel in hopes of correcting the vehicle's course, Newell continued.

However, the pickup continued into the ditch and hit the girls and mother, said Newell, who did not specify whether the passenger's hand remained on the wheel at the time of impact.

Both allegedly told police after the crash that they had been "huffing" chemical vapors from the cleaner.

The defense sought bail at $1,000, pointing out that Treu has lifelong roots in the area, is employed and is a father.

Newell argued for a high bail amount, noting that Treu has been "engaging in reckless behavior on a continuing basis." The judge set bail at the higher sum — $250,000 with conditions.

Treu's criminal history in Wisconsin includes a drunken-driving conviction in Chippewa County after authorities measured his blood alcohol content in late 2014 as above the legal limit of 0.08 percent but less than 0.15 percent.

Earlier this fall in nearby Rusk County, Treu was involved in an "eerily similar" incident when he rolled his vehicle, put it away in a garage and went to party with friends, the district attorney said during Monday's hearing. Law enforcement found in the vehicle THC, the active ingredient in marijuana, and suspected methamphetamine. That case is pending.

The Girl Scout group Saturday consisted of seven girls and five parents, and all were in the ditch and had on "highly visible" green safety vests, according to a police statement Monday.

After the crash, a sheriff's deputy "diligently tracked" vehicle fluids from the scene roughly 1 3/4 miles north to a residence in Chippewa Falls, the statement read.

Law enforcement located the truck in the garage, but Treu and the passenger had already left the house.

Nearly five hours after the crash, Treu turned himself in to police. His passenger, whose identity has yet to be released, surrendered to Eau Claire police Saturday afternoon.

Halmstad art teacher Robin Kelley is the mother of Jayna, one of the girls who died, district spokeswoman Michelle Golden said Monday. Robin Kelley was among those on the litter detail, Golden said.

In front of Halmstad on Sunday afternoon there were teddy bears, balloons, candles and a bouquet of flowers sat on two wooden benches Sunday afternoon. Inside, dozens of families met with faith leaders and counselors, as they did at Southview.

Hundreds of people gathered Sunday night in the rain outside Halmstad to remember the Girl Scouts and the mother who were struck while making their community a better place to live.

Is his family in denial or do they just not care? Did they think that this was a phase he was going through and he would snap out of it. Cos if so well they were fucking wrong.
He should be put under the jail.

A 21-year-old accused of plowing into a group of Girl Scouts on the side of a road in Wisconsin was reportedly fighting his roommate for control of his pickup truck before the crash, which killed three children and a parent.

Colton Ray Treu admitted to police that he and his roommate John Stender Jr had been 'huffing' computer keyboard cleaner before he got behind the wheel of his Ford F-150 pickup truck on Saturday morning.

Treu said he 'lost control of the vehicle and fishtailed after Mr Stender grabbed the steering wheel from him' on the rural highway near Lake Hallie, according to a criminal complaint.

Stender told authorities he took the steering wheel to correct Treu’s driving, which prompted his roommate to yell and violently grab the wheel back.

As he did so, the truck swerved into the ditch and struck the five victims, killing four and seriously injuring another.

Treu sped off after the collision, and Stender told police 'the next thing he recalled is waking up down the road', the complaint says.

Ack! Sounds like the roommate may inadvertently have caused the accident he was trying to avert :-(

But Treu was the primary operator of the vehicle and is ultimately responsible. Besides the whole thing wouldn't have happened if dipshit wasn't busy knocking himself out. The DA might try an accessory charge (as they were both huffing) but that's a stretch.

Kill them both. Use them as fertilizer for the grain grown that will be used in future girl scout cookies.

I was more worried about how he is going to deal with it than with the assignment of blame ....

A Wisconsin man has been found guilty of killing three Girl Scouts and one of their mothers in a hit-and-run last year.

Colten Treu, 22, pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and one count of hit and run causing great bodily harm on Monday in Chippewa County court.

Prosecutors said Treu had been huffing from an aerosol canister before he plowed into the group of Girl Scouts as they picked up trash along a rural road outside Lake Hallie in November 2018. The driver then fled the scene and was arrested hours later.

Nine-year-old Jayna Kelley and 10-year-old Autumn Helgeson, both of Lake Hallie, were killed, along with 10-year-old Haylee Hickle and her mother, 32-year-old Sara Jo Schneider, from the Town of Lafayette.

Another 10-year-old struck in the crash, Madalyn Zwiefelhofer, spent three weeks recovering in the hospital.

Treu will remain in jail until his sentencing after the judge revoked his $250,000 cash bond.

Colten Treu will serve 54 years in prison for causing the November 2018 crash that killed three Girl Scouts and a mother, and injured another Scout.

Judge James Isaacson ordered Treu to serve 11 years in prison on each of the four deaths, and 10 years in prison for causing the injury to Madalyn Zwiefelhofer. Treu also will serve 45 years of extended supervision: 10 years on each of the deaths and five years on the reckless injury.
Isaacson said he reviewed a 40-second police body camera video just once, and said it was surreal. That video has never been shown in court.

"It was very revealing to see how far off the roadway Mr. Treu was, and how far apart the bodies were," Isaacson said.
Until Wednesday's sentencing, Isaacson said he hadn't seen Treu show signs of remorse. The judge said simply calling the crash a "tragedy" wasn't enough.

"We know this group was among the best and brightest of the Chippewa Valley," Isaacson said.

Isaacson said there were more than 60 victim impact statements, along with 28 people that spoke during the sentencing hearing Tuesday. Isaacson fought back tears as he read from some of those victim impact statements, which described the losses the families have felt.
Treu, 23, is accused of huffing from an aerosol canister on Nov. 3, 2018, then crashing his pickup truck into members of Girl Scout Troop 3055 as they were picking up trash along Highway P in Lake Hallie, south of the Highway 29 overpass. The four people killed in the crash were Autumn Helgeson and Jayna S. Kelley, 9, both of Lake Hallie, Haylee J. Hickle, 10, and her mother, Sara Jo Schneider, 32, both of the town of Lafayette.
Treu spoke prior to being sentenced, apologizing for his actions. He said he is angry with himself. He read from prepared statements, first addressing the victims, then his family, then the court.

"I'm sorry for the pain and suffering I have caused," Treu said. "I caused you and the community to endure an event that could have been prevented. That is on me. I have read all the victim impact statements, including the one I just received."

"All of you have every right to hate me," Treu added. "No matter what I say or do, you will never know how sorry I am."

He added: "I wasn't trying to run away. I froze up and got scared. In the moment, I did not know."

Treu apologized to his family, saying he knows how difficult it has been for them to be his support system when the community is so angry at him. He also acknowledged that he huffed from inhalants that day.

The man who is supposed to be spending his next 54 years in prison for killing three Girl Scouts and one of their moms back in November 2018 is now trying to withdraw his no contest and guilty pleas.

It was Nov. 3, 2018 when Colten Treu was huffing aerosol fumes and drove his truck off the road hitting a troop of Girl Scouts picking up litter.

Fast forward to Dec. 16, 2019, Treu pleaded no contest to four counts of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle and guilty to hit and run involving great bodily harm.

In March of 2020, Treu was sentenced to 54 years in prison and 45 years of extended supervision.

Now, Treu wants to withdraw the pleas he entered in December 2019.

In court documents filed in Chippewa County, his postconviction attorney Dennis Schertz says Treu should be able to withdraw his pleas "because they were not knowing, voluntary and intelligent because he was erroneously advised by his trial attorneys that he would still be able to appeal the denial of the motion for change of venue if he changed his pleas."

The motion goes on to say, "Treu was denied the effective assistance of counsel when trial counsel failed to advise him that the entry of his pleas would eliminate his opportunity for appellate review of the denial of the change of venues motion and he was prejudiced by such deficient performance in that he did not enter a knowing and voluntary plea and would not have changed his pleas had he been advised that he would be waiving/forfeiting his right to appellate review by entering such pleas."
