SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – A longtime neurosurgeon accused of raping and sodomizing multiple children wanted to impregnate women and
create “sexual families,” according to a report.
James Kohut, who was arrested last month at his home in Santa Cruz, California, pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of child sex abuse in court Monday, local television station
KSBW reported.
Kohut was
hired by Sparks Clinic Neuroscience Center in May, but fired shortly afterward after the charges came to light.
Prosecutors have alleged that Kohut has been
preying on children for the past two decades and that he wanted to impregnate women and raise the children sexually,
according to court documents obtained by KSBW.
In one instance, Kohut told a woman he was in a relationship with that he wanted to impregnate her “so she could have a child and then they could be sexual with the child,” the document stated.
He allegedly admitted to the woman that he had previously been in a relationship with a mother of two children, a 13-year-old and a 4-year-old. Kohut told the woman he had sex in front of the two youngsters and fondled the teen, the document stated.
The woman told investigators that Kohut said he was “most interested” in children between 6 and 8 years old.
Another woman, from Australia, reported that the defendant told her he was looking for a woman to get pregnant. (...)
“Defendant then told her that if he had a daughter, he would want to impregnate her at the age of 10 and raise that child sexually as well,” the document stated.
Kohut allegedly admitted to having past sexual encounters with children, and asked the woman to volunteer at a homeless shelter or get babysitting jobs to find the young victims, she told authorities.
In another instance, a woman in Ohio who dated the suspect complained to the Seaside Police Department in 2005 that the defendant sent her child pornography and links to child porn when they dated. She recounted Kohut telling her he had sexual fantasies involving children and had sex with a 9-year-old girl and her mother.
The doctor “has a specific desire to have sex with a mother and a daughter,” other witnesses told investigators, according to the document.
A Watsonville Police Department investigation began after officials say they received a tape showing two nurses – identified as Rashel Melina Brandon and Emily Joy Stephens – sexually abusing children, according to KSWB. Kohut is accused of having affairs with both women.
The tape – which allegedly showed the women committing graphic sex acts against three children — was described as “disgusting” and disturbing,” by police Capt. George Zamora. Police arrested both women and seven children were placed in protective custody, KSWB reports.
“I can tell you it’s very disturbing. I have not seen a case like this in my career. It’s very sad,” he told the television station.
Kohut and the nurses face a number of charges stemming from alleged encounters with children between January 2016 and May 2017, including committing oral copulation, sexual penetration and sodomy against children.
Each faces life in prison if convicted on the charges.

Documents presented in court on Friday describe twenty years of deviant behavior with the physician attempting to impregnate women so he could have sex with their children.
In his opposition to bail, Assistant District Attorney Steve Moore presented evidence that Kohut had been the focus of several criminal investigations over the past twenty years but somehow evaded conviction, reported the
Sentinel.
“For nearly 20 years, the defendant has had a fixed sexual desire to be part of multiple “taboo families” where the parents rise their children sexually,” ADA Moore’s opposition to bail stated.
Kohut’s growing case involves women and their children from California to Florida and extends internationally with him luring women from Australia and planning to adopt a child from Mexico, according to court documents.

SANTA CRUZ – He wanted to be called “Daddy.”
That’s what court documents say about a former Santa Cruz brain surgeon – still licensed to practice in California – accused of raping children with two nurses in Santa Cruz County. New information released Friday alleges Dr. James Kohut of Soquel, who recently moved to Arkansas, sought to impregnate women to have sex with their children.
Despite the probes, Kohut, 57, never has been convicted of a crime and it’s unclear how he eluded authorities for so long.
Kohut’s illicit pattern dates to 1997 in Santa Cruz County, Seaside, Riverside and Sacramento. He also lured women and children from Ohio, Florida, Louisiana, Nevada and Australia, according to court documents.
In the current case, Kohut now faces 11 felonies. He had faced 10 charges. All charges are linked to sodomy, lewd acts with children and other forced offenses. The allegations started with three victims. The Watsonville Police Department’s investigation had information about the possibility of up to seven victims.
It is unclear whether the new information released Friday will unveil additional child victims.
The latest charge of lewd acts upon a child alleges Kohut had sex with a Louisiana girl younger than 14 sometime between January 2003 and December 2005, according to an amended complaint filed Thursday.
On May 9, Kohut, Brandon and Stephens also allegedly committed forced sexual acts with three boys younger than 14 – one was 3 years old – and a girl younger than 14, according to court documents.
Rorty also maintains that no evidence he has received actually links his client to the crimes.
He said there are two videos depicting Brandon and Stephens with children. The first video was taken sometime in March, Rorty wrote.
“The video depicts Brandon turning on the camera,” Rorty wrote. “She and Stephens then engage in sexual acts with three children.”
The second video was found on Brandon’s cell phone, according to court documents. In the second video, which lacks a date, “Stephens can be seen performing oral copulation on a child. A male knocks on the door and enters. One child refers to ‘James.’ The children ask someone to take their shirt off and a male voice says, ‘Okay,'” Rorty wrote.
Police reports allege Kohut’s voice is heard in the video.
The police reports also reveal that when officers searched Brandon’s home, they found three photos of Stephens performing sexual acts on two children with a note: “James Kohut made me do this,” Rorty wrote.
“There is no indication that law enforcement is in possession of any video or photographic evidence of Dr. Kohut committing such crimes,” Rorty wrote. “Much of the evidence against Dr. Kohut consists of allegations by Brandon, who has already demonstrated a willingness to lie to investigators regarding her own crimes even when confronted with images evidencing her criminal conduct.”

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reported that Kohut's attorney argued that the doctor had not acted on complusions and was only guilty of a "thought crime".
Kohut was arrested days after the arrest of Rashel Brandon, a nurse he worked with, whose husband allegedly found a video showing her and another nurse abusing three children. Court documents say that when police took Brandon's phone they found video of the other nurse, Emily Stephens, abusing a child while a male voice can be heard.
The phone also allegedly countained three photographs and a note saying "James Kohut made me do this".
Kohut's attorney said in documents that his client does not appear in any of the videos or photographs.
"There is no indication that law enforcement is in possession of any video or photographic evidence of Dr Kohut committing such crimes," he said. The attorney added that evidence came from Brandon, who he said had "already demonstrated a willingness to lie to investigators regarding her own crimes even when confronted with images evidencing her criminal conduct."
After Kohut's arrest, a woman from Louisiana also reportedly came forward alleging that Kohut had sexually assaulted her after flying her and her mother to Santa Cruz from Baton Rouge. The woman told investigators that Kohut assaulted her in a motel room after her mother, who Kohut had met online, passed out.
Kohut will remain in custody until a 28 June hearing to set his bail. If found guilty, he could face 165 years in prison.
