A Texas man was reportedly sentenced to 70 years in prison for spitting at Lubbock police officers during an arrest last May.

Cops picked up Larry Pearson, 36, on domestic violence charges after he allegedly hit a woman several times in the face, leaving her with “multiple visible injuries,” according to EverythingLubbock.com.

Pearson allegedly got angry when officers didn’t arrest the victim, and started kicking the door of the police cruiser. When two cops opened the door to demand he stop, Pearson spat at them and kept doing so even after he got to the Lubbock County Detention Center, the website said.

Jurors later found him guilty of two counts of harassment of a public servant.

During the trial’s closing arguments, prosecutor Jessica Gorman asked the jury to “send a message” to both the suspect and society with its sentencing.

Pearson had prior convictions for aggravated robbery and family violence, Gorman said. As a result, he faced a minimum sentence of 25 years.
“If you’re going to live the life of crime, you’re going to do that among other criminals [in prison],” Gorman told the court, according to EverythingLubbock.com.

Jim Shaw, Pearson’s defense attorney, told jurors that the sentencing was for a “simple misdemeanor” that got out of control.

The article said spitting at them so he didnt even spit on them. 70yrs. is overkill, they need to set an example when sentencing police officers. However studies has shown sentencing people to maximum # of yrs doesnt do anything to help the crime rate the examples set does nothing. Criminals kw the time they'll face before planning & committing crimes. There's no sentence more extreme than death murders kw they can be put to death & they still kill. You get lifers that end up being geriatric patients of the govt they're the most expensive inmates to house and the jail/govt won't release them what is a 80yr old inmate w/Alzheimers, dementia, & stage 4 cancer goin to do. A judge & prosecutor that were known for seeking & giving out maximum punishments on all types of f crimes now regret their decisions on doing that.

In New York City, or any other blue municipality, he could've raped, murdered, carjacked, robbed, squatted, robbed, etc., and been let go on little or no bail to do all of those again and again. Good work, Texas!

So in Texas it's worse to spit at a cop than it is the punch your partner in the face repeatedly? Like 35 times worse?

I mean, it sounds like he DOES need to be put away... but imho the DV should have the higher sentence.
