Multiple people have been killed in a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive.

Police said some of the shooting victims are children but it is not clear if they are among the dead. They were still searching the school at 11 a.m., and police dogs had been brought in.

Sources said a person believed to be a shooter is dead. Earlier reports of a second shooter are unconfirmed.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had “numerous gunshot wounds,â€￾ police said.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers. Some students were still in the school at 10:30 a.m., parents said.

School and local emergency officials are accounting for the children, who will be released to their parents to get them home. A staging area has been set up at the Sandy Hook fire department, directly in front of the school.

Frustrated parents are trying to get information from officials, who are still actively searching the school.

Dozens of state troopers are on the scene assisting local police. Heavily armed police gathered in front of the school around 10:45 a.m., and a number of stretchers were set up.

Area hospitals have been alerted.

The shooter was killed and apparently had two guns, a person with knowledge of the shooting said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was still under way.

It wasn't clear how many people were injured at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher had been shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital.

Stephen Delgiadice said his 8-year-old daughter heard two big bangs and teachers told her to get in a corner. His daughter was fine.

I just saw that update. As a mother of a kindergartener this kind of shit scares the hell of me. While his school is located in a pretty safe area and down the road from a Police Station the thought that this shit can happen makes me ill to my stomach. Glad the dude is dead, but if he wasn't I would say hand the piece of shit over the parents and let them tear him apart.

This is the first thing I read when I opened my computer this afternoon. I was in tears as I was reading. Just the look on those kids faces that were being evacuated was enough to push me over the edge. At this time of year families should be thinking about family dinners and all the wonderful things that go along with the holidays. Not planning funerals and dealing with this kind of crap. My heart goes out to not only the children involved but all the parents!

I heard the shooter was 20 years old. If he's a father of one of the students, he was a young kid when his baby was born. Of course, this could be another rumor, but it does lead me to wonder if this was another one of those custody disputes gone way to hell. So many possibilities. I wonder if we'll even know.

There were 2 kindergarten classes in the school. Each with 17 students. With most of the shooting in the kindergarten classroom, the numbers look like he wiped out a whole class.

You have to ring a bell to get into the school. He went to the office while "Morning Announcements" were going on and started shooting before going to the classroom.
 
Why the most innocent little people you could possibly find to take your anger out on? I don't get it! WTF is wrong with people that they feel the need to spread their own misery this way?
 
I sit here almost in tears as I read updates. I think for once in my life I am glad that I have work tonight as I will be unable to see or hear updates about this. Maybe it is time for me to get the fuck off here and go do something else for awhile. Like I said before, having a little one in Kindergarten is making this hit me hard.
 
I knew it was going to be a parent. Just something about this said familial but I went for a faculty member coz they started in the front office and then went for the classroom. Just so so sad. A whole classroom? 27 innocent lives just gone. I wonder who the second suspect is they arrested.

He was wearing cammo pants and black jacket in the woods behind the school but they dont know if he happened to have been there and was taken just because of his clothing
That princilple died but she saved the lives of many kids by switching the loud speaker on to signal the teachers something was happening that shouldnbt be

My daughter (the HS teacher) just called me. Crying. She wanted to rush to her kindergarten daughter's school and just keep Ryleigh with her all day.

This is so incomprehensible to everyone.
 
I know the numbers will keep changing but CNN is reporting closer to 30 now...I have never cried so hard while watching the news. They are just babies dammit! I cannot wait for my babies to get off the bus so I can hold them.

CNN also just reported the shooters name as Ryan Lanza

Reports on TV of a woman's body being found at a house associated with the shooter. Possibly his mother.

The death toll in today's shooting at a Connecticut elementary school is closer to 30, a federal law enforcement source in Washington told CNN.

He also said the suspected gunman, who is dead, had a connection to the school. The source is in touch with authorities on the scene.

The historian in me is quite pleased they remembered this one before announcing "the worst school massacre ever" again. So many lazy journalists seem to have no idea that "things" might have happened back in the good old days, too.



Noticed the headline on BBC's website earlier and knew I could come here for the condensed version after work. Nasty story.
 
CNN's Susan Candiotti has just reported that a law enforcement official tells her the suspect is named Ryan Lanza and he is in his 20s.


So, young father? Older brother who felt the school wasn't doing something right? I wonder if we're going to see the bullying card played in some way, shape, or form.
