A Racine man is charged with dragging a dog behind his van.

The dog's owner, who is distraught by the entire ordeal, told WISN 12 News a family friend is the one accused of committing the crime.

According to the criminal complaint, witnesses told police they saw a green van dragging a tan dog on Lasalle Street, near Patrick Street about 9:30 p.m. Aug. 11.

Police followed a blood trail, tracking down the van in front of a home two blocks away where the dog's owner lives. Peter Valente was sleeping inside the van.

Valente told the officer he drove the van to buy beer. Witnesses said he drove to a nearby Pump and Pantry and was "very intoxicated"

When asked if he dragged the dog, the criminal complaint says Valente told police, "If something like that happened, it would be an accident."

The dog had road rash, significant bruising and all four legs had exposed tendons, the complaint says.

The pit bull, named Rocky, survived and is at the humane society.

The owner said he can't get him back because he's facing his own charges.

The criminal complaint says the dog was already in poor condition, underweight with mange and broken teeth

2 fucking blocks? Really? What a fucking moron! He can't stumble 2 blocks to get more beer at the "Pump and Pantry" (what a fucking redneck name), but had to DRIVE drunk with his dog in tow. Good thing for the dog it was only 2 blocks though, we don't need a repeat of what happened to Dinky.

A Racine man accused of dragging a dog with his van was sentenced to probation.

Peter M. Valente, 54, pleaded no contest to an amended misdemeanor charge of intentionally mistreating animals.

During his plea and sentencing hearing, Valente briefly addressed the court. “I’m just so sorry this happened,” Valente said.
Assistant District Attorney Micha Schwab recommended one year initial incarceration, plus one year extended supervisor, stayed for one year of probation. A stayed sentence means Valente would not serve the sentence unless he violated terms of the purposed one-year probation.

The sentence would run consecutively to a revocation sentence Valente served after being arrested while on probation for a previous crime.
The 8-year-old dog named Rocky was taken to a veterinarian, who said the dog’s injuries were consistent with being dragged. Rocky’s injuries included bruising and road rash to his stomach and testicles, exposed tendons with black cauterization to all four legs and open and exposed paw pads.

The vet said that Rocky was in poor condition before the accident and may have needed to be euthanized due to its injuries. In May, Johnson (Rocky's owner) also was charged with intentionally mistreating animals.
Rocky later made a full recovery and in November, was adopted and moved to Colorado.
