5-month-old Pitbull-mix puppy is recovering in the care and custody of Genesee County Animal Control after being rescued from a woman authorities say beat and neglected him.
Nataya Shalon Cabine, 35, is charged with a single felony count of killing/torturing an animal and one misdemeanor charge of abandoning/cruelty to an animal in connection with the rescue of Nugget, a dog authorities said was removed from her possession after being found in deplorable conditions.
Nugget was discovered on April 5 by a delivery man dropping off groceries to a neighbor of Cabine’s, according to information presented Monday, April 9, in a video posted to the sheriff’s office Facebook page featuring Swanson and Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton.
The delivery driver called police, reporting that the dog was being beaten and appeared to be starved.
Witnesses told investigators they saw Cabine repeatedly punch the dog in the face after it urinated in the cage it was locked in. The cage was devoid of water and food. It was drenched in urine and feces was “piling up” in the cage, officials said.
The dog’s spine, hip bones and ribs were visible, according to investigators. Swanson showed the dog’s paws and belly, which he said were stained yellow because it was sleeping and standing in urine his entire life.

“There is no excuse for this,” the sheriff said.
