This is Keanu Williams, the toddler who died of ‘non-accidental injuries’ at the weekend.

Known as 'Kiwi' to his family, the two-year-old boy was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Birmingham's Heartlands Hospital on Sunday. The youngster is said to have suffered a heart attack.

A 22-year-old woman, believed to be the boy's mother, and a 29-year-old man, thought to be her partner, were arrested in connection with the death. They have now been released on police bail after four days of questioning.

Neighbours in the inner-city Ward End area of Birmingham spoke of seeing a frantic young woman performing mouth-to-mouth on the toddler as ambulance crews arrived

A spokesperson from West Midlands Police confirmed that a post-mortem examination carried out on Tuesday indicated the child died from 'non-accidental injuries'.

'All of the family have now been informed and a family liaison officer has been appointed to support them during this difficult time,' they said.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: 'Crews arrived to find a woman giving CPR to a young boy who was in cardiac arrest.

'Crews immediately took over resuscitation attempts and ran with the boy to the back of the ambulance where they were met by the medics.

'Medics at the hospital were pre-alerted to the arrival of the boy who was in a critical condition.

'Unfortunately despite the best efforts of everyone, nothing could be done to save the boy and he was confirmed dead shortly after arrival at hospital.'

A TODDLER who died from horrific injuries in Birmingham was on the at-risk register and was seen by social workers just days before his death.

The Mail has learned that his 22- year-old mum previously had two other children taken off her by social services.

A source close to the case told the Mail: “The boy was taken to hospital on Sunday evening.

“He had suffered both external and internal injuries.

“It’s thought that he died as a result of severe injuries to his abdomen. It’s believed he died on the Sunday but may have suffered some of the injuries on the Friday.

“He may have suffered a slow, agonising death.”

Kiwi was known to Birmingham City Council’s children’s services department and other agencies.

City child safety experts have launched a review into the death.

The source added: “Kiwi was on the council’s at-risk register. His two siblings had been taken into care in the past.

“Kiwi was definitely seen by social workers between the Monday and the Friday in the week before he died.”

Meanwhile neighbours said the couple moved into the house around three months ago. They did not realise they had a child.
[...]
Salesman and father-of-two, Amar Shez, aged 30, said: “This couple had been there for three months and I hadn’t even seen a child in there. I had seen a male and female come out of the house.

“I hadn’t even seen a pram.

A man and a woman have appeared before a crown court judge charged with murdering a toddler.

Rebecca Shuttleworth, 23, and Luke Southerton, 30, are accused of killing two-year-old Keanu Williams on January 9.
[...]

Shuttleworth, of Cottingham Road, Manchester, is further charged with causing or allowing Keanu's death and two counts of child cruelty.

Southerton, of Hagley Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, faces further counts of causing or allowing the death of a child and one charge of child cruelty.

Both defendants spoke only to confirm their personal details during the preliminary hearing at Birmingham Crown Court.

Judge James Burbidge QC remanded them in custody to appear at the same court on March 5 for a plea and case management hearing.

Southerton was cleared of murder, manslaughter and causing or allowing the death, but convicted of cruelty yesterday after a six-month trial.
Shuttleworth, who was convicted of four counts of child cruelty as well as murder, will be sentenced alongside him today.
She has been on bail throughout the case and attended court with a woman she was heard to describe as her ‘partner’.

Sounds like the court decided that mummy did it, and not her penis. Somehow, that makes this even worse.

A mother convicted of beating her two-year-old son to death in Birmingham after subjecting him to months of horrific cruelty has been jailed for life.

Rebecca Shuttleworth was ordered to serve at least 18 years in jail after being convicted following a six-month trial of murdering Keanu Williams.
[...]

The 25-year-old inflicted what detectives described as "horrifying" injuries on Keanu after apparently convincing her support worker that she had turned her life around.

It has emerged that Shuttleworth was filmed celebrating a £10,000 lottery win while on bail for the murder of Keanu, whose body showed 37 external marks of injury.

A two-minute video posted on YouTube by the People's Postcode Lottery shows the 25-year-old shouting in delight as her friend is presented with a "Street Prize" cheque outside a property in Rusholme, Manchester.
[...]

The judge, who also passed concurrent sentences for child cruelty totalling four years, told Shuttleworth: "The jury have convicted you of the brutal murder of your two-year-old son.

"He was a defenceless child and it was your duty to protect him. Instead you beat him so severely he died a lingering death from his injuries a day or so later.

"You have also been convicted of cruelty by failing to summon the medical aid he so badly needed."

Paying tribute to Keanu, the judge added: "He was a delightful little boy described as a real character, a little entertainer who remained cheerful despite everything.

"Joyful was the word that more than one witness used to describe him - he was a favourite at nursery as well as within the family.

"His death has left a void in many live which will never be filled."

Although the judge accepted that Shuttleworth had experienced her share of tragedy in losing her mother and grandmother following a "troubling" upbringing, he said she had shown a cruel and vicious streak towards Keanu.

As Shuttleworth wept in the dock, the judge added: "By the jury's verdict, you alone were responsible for the violence which led to Keanu's death.

"One can scarcely imagine the pain and distress Keanu must have suffered from this outburst of violence.

"He must have been terrified, it must have been clear to you as soon as the violence had taken place that Keanu was badly in need of medical attention."

Shuttleworth had decided not to seek medical help because she knew his injuries, including internal bleeding to his abdomen, could not be explained away, the judge said.
[...]

Shuttleworth's partner, Luke Southerton, was cleared of murder, manslaughter and causing or allowing the death of a child, but convicted of one incident of cruelty towards Keanu during which he was bitten, apparently in an attempt to stop him biting other people.

Southerton, 32, was given a nine-month jail term suspended for two years, and ordered to complete 200 hours of unpaid work for the community.

Keanu was found with head and chest injuries in Ward End, Birmingham, and pronounced dead at hospital.

He had "30 visible burns and injuries to his tiny body" and lived a "chaotic" and seemingly "very nomadic life", police said.

Moving with his mother, Keanu lived in several places in the last six months of his life, including with his aunt, his grandfather and Southerton.

Children are not born to be your punching bags. If you need to work out your frustrations at your own life, do it the traditional way and go down to the local pub and pick a fight. Learn to use birth control while you're in prison, since unfortunately your life will not be over in 18 years that "life" really means there.

Poor Kiwi. He didn't deserve to have a cretinous, selfish, battleaxe for a mother. How did he manage to keep a happy face? And who the hell ever saw it? The neighbors said they didn't even know he was there!

'There will ALWAYS be parents who kill their children': Social worker says preventing all mothers like Rebecca Shuttleworth from murdering babies like Keanu IMPOSSIBLE

uxPRHrF.jpg

A senior child protection social worker has said that cases in which parents systematically neglect, abuse and finally murder their children will never be completely eradicated from society.

Laura Eden, who works in social services for Islington Council and also at The College of Social Work, said that preventing all child killings is impossible, regardless of how early or efficiently services such as hers or the police step in.

Eden was speaking in light of the news that 25-year-old mother Rebecca Shuttleworth was jailed for life by Birmingham Crown Court for beating to death her son Keanu Williams, two, over a period of time, inflicting injuries upon the toddler that were described as 'horrifying'. Shuttleworth was said to show no remorse over the killing.

Shuttleworth and her son had been known to police, doctors and social services.

Making the comments on today's This Morning, Eden said: 'You will never eradicate all child death, or child abuse and neglect. No matter what we do there will always be parents who kill their children, and that's quite harsh, but that's reality.'

She continued: 'I can't comment whether Shuttleworth was on social services' radar. But in the business we call what she did 'disguise compliance', when parents present themselves to social services as very compliant, as if they are caring for their children very well, in the open. But behind closed doors they are not. and that could have been the case in this one.
[...]

Eden was joined by Criminologist Dr Elizabeth Yardley and former Met Detective Chief Superintendent Sue Hill to discuss Shuttleworth's case with presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langford.

DCS Hill said she would rather people who saw local families struggling made a call to social services than leave it for fear of looking nosy: 'I would rather make that phone call and save that child.'

Defending social services, she added: 'There are thousands of children being protected on child protection plan as we speak.

'However, when you drop one ball it's a disaster. And we've lost a little boy.

'The thing is, to be a child protection team officer or social worker you have to be very gutsy, very experienced - you have to be able to challenge the clinical findings of doctors.'

In response to the question "why do mothers kill?", Dr Yardley said that murderous parents can be split into two camps, those in mental ill health and those with parental deficit.

She said: 'People experiencing mental health aren't really developing the capacity to fulful the parent role. They might be suffering from psychosis or Munchausen Syndrome by proxy.

'The second group is parental deficit - people who are perfectly sane, perfeclty competent, but are not putting their children's needs in front of their own, so you've got this continuous neglect, continuous abuse, and that's sometimes exacerbated to such a point that it has fatal consequences.'

Dr Yardley said Shuttleworth would probably fall into the category of parental deficit.

She added that Shuttleworth lied and hid the damage she had caused to Keanu to protect herself, saying: 'It isn't about concern for their child's welfare. They're incredibly selfish, incredibly manipulative, and very self-absorbed.'

Dr Yardley said in situations like these the local community has a role to play. She said: 'We need to look more widely. We're very quick to jump on health and social services, but we're very reluctant to pry into other families' lives ourselves.'

Birmingham City Council has said it is “unequivocally sorry” after a report found social services missed opportunities to save two-year-old Keanu Williams, who was murdered by his mother.
[...]

A serious case review, published today, found professionals in a range of agencies “had collectively failed to prevent Keanu’s death as they missed a significant number of opportunities to intervene and take action.”

The council’s director of children’s services Peter Hay described today’s report as “a further blight upon this city’s reputation, as we have failed to meet the basic expectation that our children are safe.”

He said: “For this we are unequivocally sorry. We accept too, that given our record in failing to improve children’s services that our apology may ring hollow and any assurance of lessons learnt or other such statement is meaningless.

“We therefore want today’s report, into a death two years ago, to be the point of real change in children’s services.”

Jane Held, chair of the Birmingham Safeguarding Children Board, pointed to a “failure across every agency to see, hear and respond to him in the context of what he was experiencing at any one point in time,” adding that staff took what Ms Shuttleworth told them “at face value”.

The board, which is made up of local public agencies and voluntary organisations, has also accepted some responsibility for the failures.

“We failed as senior managers, individual organisations and collectively as a board to ensure staff knew what do to and were actually doing it,” Ms Held said. “As a result many opportunities to protect Keanu were missed or ignored.”

Her statement also said Birmingham needed “sufficient numbers of properly trained child protection professionals” in order to better protect children.

“Frontline staff doing complex, difficult and often very distressing work deserve to be properly trained, resourced, supervised, and supported if practice is to improve,” she said.

Poor baby, the bitch expected him to be taken away at birth and when they didn't she decided to punish him for it.
Sometimes I think if you have ANY kids taken away from you then you should be made to have your uterus taken out so you can no longer breed and spend the rest of your life paying for someone else to raise them.

Why didn't she just give the baby up for adoption?

I don't know what keeps people like these from giving their babies up.
Is it shame? Is it pride? Lack of resources or education?

I feel all through a woman's pregnancy & after giving birth while still in the hospital they should be given info. Safe Haven info, adoption info, etc. Something like, "Has a child of yours been placed in CPS care? If so, here are some options to consider..."
Over & over & over until they've memorized the info. I'm not saying it will work if shame or pride get in the way.....but if knowledge of what to do becomes common....maybe more babies will be given a chance.

All I can say is poor Kiwi my heart just broke for this baby :( Hopefully there is a big Bertha just missing her babies in prison and will become this bitches roomy and Bertha puts a hurting on her whenever Bertha misses her babies for the rest of this evil bitches term.
May his little soul rest in peace at least now no one can hurt him ever again and the image of his last days of life haunt her in her waking moments and her nightmares. Most people don't understand how I can be with someone like him as I am the total opposite but it was the watching him grow as a man and the demeanor that came along with it that made me want to explore the world of abuse and what makes people behave the way they do towards others and well the morbid side developed with my research.

Wesley Williams, 28, (left) has been jailed for life for the double murder of his girlfriend Yvonne. He and his ex partner Rebecca Shuttleworth (right), who killed her two-year-old son Keanu, now write love letters from prison

Twisted former partners who went on to murder a child each are now writing love letters to each other from their prison cells
  • Wesley Williams, 29, jailed for life with a minimum of 29 years
  • Used a ligature to carry out 'chilling, casual and calculated' killings
  • Former girlfriend Rebecca Shuttleworth is now writing to him from prison
  • She was convicted of the murder of two-year-old son Keanu

Umm... Was this his child?! The "mother" (and I use that term verrrrrry losely) has the surname Shuttleworth. Her deceased son's last name is Williams, same as her baby killer boyfriend Wesley. From the other article on the forum about HIS crimes, it appears they have some history.

I know Williams is an extremely common surname (being a Williams myself)... but I am very curious about poor Keanu's paternity. Somehow makes this story even more disgusting to think that they may be writing love letters to each other after she killed their shared child.
