AKRON, Ohio - UPDATE 5 p.m. Friday: Werner has been upgraded to stable condition. He's still on a breathing tube, and is expected to stay in the hospital for at least another week.

Two-year-old Aiden Werner lies in critical condition after being severely injured by Kurtis Mathes late last month

Mathes called 9-1-1 telling the dispatcher the child had fallen down the stairs, but Aiden’s injuries after he arrived at the hospital did not support that theory.
“After going over his injuries,” said Rhiannon Barnett, the child’s mother. “[Doctors] realized it was not from falling down the steps. It was severe visible abuse."
Mathes is in the Summit County jail, charged with child neglect and assault.
He is Barnett's boyfriend and was babysitting Aiden January 29 when the incident happened sometime that night around 7 p.m.

Aiden had emergency surgery on his brain that lasted for over 2 hours. At one point he flat lined on the table until he was revived.
Police have said it’s hard to tell if the child was beaten or if this is a case of shaken baby syndrome. They said they will know more after an MRI is done Friday.
