LYNN, AR – It’s been awhile since we have reported on an incident like this, but an 8-year-old boy in Arkansas died after a tombstone fell on top of him.

According to Detective Jaime White of the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened on Saturday as the boy was attending a birthday party at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.

The boy was climbing on a headstone shaped like a tree stump, dated 1906, when it came loose and fell on top of the boy. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Jeff Nely, the church’s pastor, called the boy a “rambunctious young man” who was “full of life” and says church members are planning to help the family financially in some way.

“Just trying to love them and let them know that we support them and trying to comfort them and give peace as best we can,” said Neely.

This is the fourth tombstone related death we have reported on that I remember.

In 2012, a 4-year-old boy in Utah died after a headstone fell on top of him while he played in a graveyard, and a 4-year-old girl in North Carolina died the same way. The most recent story was from 2015, when a 74-year-old man in Pennsylvania was killed by a falling headstone as he was decorating a family gravesite for Easter.

I have made it clear that when I die, I do not want a funeral or to be buried. The entire affair is depressing for those attending, and a rip-off for those paying for it. Just cremate my ass and dump the ashes down the nearest toilet. However, I am glad others don’t feel the same way… I mean, without cemeteries, I’d never find a date.

Maybe the kid was a very big fan of Ed Harris’ character in the movie, CREEPSHOW.

  • dammitall23

“Rambunctious young man” sounds like code for “uncontrolled little hellion”. Guess cemeteries need to come with warning labels now.

  • JohnQknowitall

I used to think the same way of funerals being a catered party with tears with the party girl/boy in her/his finest just before being thrown in a hole. I now and again come to terms that with death I lose control, my house, my savings and within a year any mediocre amount of relevancy I had just to my demise. Besides, what the hell do I care? I am dead and rigor mortus has come and gone. I won’t have any money. I will have nothing to say. Everything I see in the mirror will be the property of others. Let them do what they want. Young family members one day old telling the future young family members, “I wish we had….” I would prefer my last act not to be “ass holiness doubts” forced on the current young and reverberated in the minds of the future young. Just a Christmas thought….

  • JohnQknowitall

I thought the same thing except with words that are stronger than the ones you used for your translation.

  • Wow, this happens a lot actually, this is like the third time I’ve read about a child dying this way smh

  • Peggy Storer

I apologize in advance for coming off ignorant, but it’s hard for me to imagine how this stone would have killed a healthy 8 year old. Was it blunt force trauma.. or was he crushed to death? Im aware of the fact that these headstones are extremely heavy, but it seems like he could’ve lived if someone were there watching

  • jansav

Maybe cemeteries are not play grounds. Maybe tombstones weren’t meant to be climbed on. RIP little man your life ended way too soon. May his family find the strength to move on.

  • Siobhan

My guess would be positional asphyxia: if the stone fell on him, it would knock the air out of his lungs, and it’s weight would prevent him from being able to breathe.
This would take 3-4 minutes at the most, so quickly that unless someone was right there with him when it occurred, he’d be dead before anyone realized where he was and what had happened.

  • I used to do some weird shit in graveyards, nothing ever happened to me.

  • Sejanus

Well at least they didn’t have far to go.
The kid was playing in the garden of the dead…
    now he lives…er…resides there.

  • Perhaps if his parents had taught him some respect, he’d still be alive.

  • 1DireWolf

I used to say that when I died I wanted to be cremated and then have my ashes smuggled into the Massengill Douche company but now we know douches are not healthy, so I just want to be cremated and have my ashes let free into the air and I will find some asshole I hate and get into their fucking eye.

    Ha! Take That Donald Trump!

  • 1DireWolf

Yep, way to drum up new business.

  • I’m glad I wasn’t the only one thinking that

  • Maybe children shouldn’t be playing in cemeteries…….

  • Valerie

    Same here.

  • Yea, it sounded like he was kinda blaming the kid in a sense. I’m like Really Dude?

  • True

Maybe just electric fences. I thought the same after reading “rambunctious young man”. Ouch.

  • True

    Define “weird”.

  • True

    Bingo!

  • True

He would just lick you right out of his eyeball.

  • Robin Wise

Look on the bright side; at least he was already in the cemeterey.

  • Stating The Obvious

You have them smuggled into an adult toy company, giving the Magic Bullet a whole new meaning.

  • as a child. my shitbird first cousin broke his leg when one fell on him when fucking around in a graveyard.

  • Stupid parents too busy with their bullshit church nonsense, should have been watching their kids, telling them not to play on people’s final resting places.

  • Fang DelGato

Oh Morbid, how do I love thee for your writing, your hatred of child beaters/killers/molesters, and your dislike of funerals. As I’ve said before, I was totally in love with you before I learned you weren’t a thirty-something lesbian like I’d imagined. Fuck, I’m still disappointed by that.

I thought that too. But then there is the old man who was simply tending a relative’s grave when a killer headstone singled him out. I love cemeteries. My kids and I hike through the huge wooded cemetery where my dad is buried all the time. But my kids know better than to climb tombstones. Its a beautiful setting but its not a playground after all.

  • GracieW

Geez. It was a birthday party, not “bullshit church nonsense”.

  • dammitall23

Somebody needed to be watching/controlling that kid. Cemetery monuments aren’t rated for playground equipment. It’s horribly disrespectful, anyway, to let your kid use some family’s monument as monkey bars.

  • Valerie

Holy Fuck! Sign my ass up!

  • GGMon

Not blaming the kid but who allowed him to run around in a cemetery? I was taught the cemetery was a place of respect to the dead and any hangups has to be left by the church doors. My mom would have been dragging my ass had I acted like that. It’s still an unfortunate loss but could have been prevented.

  • Peggy Storer

Thank you Siobhan. That makes perfect sense. I love your name btw!!

People are just dying to get in there.

I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my grandpa did, not screaming like the passengers in his car.

What sort of Parents allow children to play on the grave of someones lost loved one. Is there no respect of a persons remembrance. Bloody Adults that think about themselves again.

  • Clark W Griswold

I agree. Very disrespectful. Also, a headstone that old is just waiting to crumble. Not blaming the parents, but wondering where they were.

  • Benighted

I’ve been involved with cemetery research and preservation for years and something that is not widely known is that older monuments have no cementing or even pinning sometimes. Stones were expected to stay in place by gravity. Some of the larger more elaborate ones were designed by architects and engineers, not sculptors and artists. Add in a hundred years ground shift and cemeteries are an accident waiting to happen. When my kid got old enough to run and climb but not old enough to understand complex safety issues I stopped all field research for a few years because i was scared of something like this happening to her. Even a small child’s stone can weigh 100lbs+ depending on the material.
