Jury Recommends Death Penalty For Collings In Rowan Ford Case

Rolla, MO - Well, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. A Phelps County jury has recommended the death penalty for Christopher Collings, who killed nine-year-old Rowan Ford in 2007. Yesterday at 6:17 p.m., the jury returned the verdict after forty-eight minutes of deliberation. Can I get an amen up in here?

Rowan Damia Ford was a sweet nine-year-old who made As and Bs in school even though sometimes her teachers had to make sure she ate. She helped with the Angel Food ministry at her church, and often arrived there hours early on Sunday, even though nobody else in her house went. She was happy on her bike, riding around town. She liked Disney princesses, spaghetti and the color purple. Rowan was 3’11″ tall and weighed 62 pounds, with long, wavy brown hair, big brown eyes, and freckles across her nose. Rowan did not need to die.

It won’t help us to go over the details of the brutal rape and the strangulation that ended Rowan’s life. It’s enough to know that she would likely have bled to death, but instead she got a cord around her neck and a horrific end in a dirty trailer. Rowan was found dumped into a hole that led to a cave, half naked, because Collings and Rowan’s own stepfather, David Spears, are the worst kind of pedophile baby-killers imaginable.

The jurors were bussed in from Platte County, sequestered in Phelps County to hear a Barry County prosecutor talk about a little girl from Newton County who was dumped in McDonald County. They did an admirable job.

The message to Collings? “Mercy is something given by the powerful to the weak and innocent,” said Prosecutor Johnnie Cox. The jury found Collings neither weak or innocent.

Rowan’s mother Colleen Munson left the courtroom without speaking with reporters, but her sister Ariane said she was happy with the verdict.

Christopher Collings is scheduled for sentencing on May 11. I plan to be there, just so I can look at that rat bastard when Missouri tells him to go die. Just like he told Rowan.

When the story includes raped, beaten, strangled, bled, and dumped (among others), you are right the story does not demand details. I believe for any this true of anybody whose death is attached to those words, but most certainly when a child is involved.

David Spears is set for trial in November. Hopefully Missouri will see enough of Rowan’s face between now and then to remind people why a conviction is necessary in his case, as well.

Knowing the details of this child’s personality is completely heartbreaking. This monster treated her life as a dispensible commodity. She definitely did not deserve the fate that was handed to her. If only this POS could experience the same death penalty Rowan had. Not just “a” death penalty, but the same suffering this poor child endured. How easy it is to snuff his pathetic life out, he deserves so much more than that.

I think…..a third option of punishment should be available for especially heinous crimes where there is absolute proof of guilt.

That third option? Give the victims family 1 hour with the killer to do whatever they wish.

By my math, In 36 years they have executed 66 people.=1.8/year. With 54 on death row now, that is 30 years until he is on deck if the math is linear.

This is strictly the math and does not include appeals and special circumstances to his case and others, political DP attitude shift or the fact, he may be killed in prison or off himself. One could only hope for the latter.

Back in the old days, here anyway, when we still had the death penalty, from trial to death was usually about a week.

The average time on death row in MO is actually shorter, particularly since 1989. http://missourideathrow.com/executions-1989-2009/

You still see the twenty-year guys, but a fair chunk of DR inmates appear to be exhausting their appeals in less time – ten to fifteen years in many cases. It’s still too long, but for most of these guys, a few appeals is enough to verify their guilt, especially where DNA or other forensic science is applied and results on multiple tests (prints, DNA, hair) are positive.

Normally I’m not a death sentence advocate, particularly in states with high rates of execution and a history of postmortem exoneration. Missouri gets it right most of the time. The Innocence Project doesn’t have a single case of a convicted murderer in Missouri being exonerated, either before or after execution. Then again, death row in MO has one-sixth the inmates of, say, death row in Texas. We don’t sentence a lot of people to death, here – but when we do, they deserve it.

I fully expect Collings to be formally sentenced to death row in May. I’m not sure that Spears will be, although it wouldn’t shock me. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him handed LWOP. Either way, Collings will appeal, probably more than once, and claim that Spears killed Rowan, that he was coerced into saying he did it, etc. It won’t fly, because that was never presented in this trial. Collings will die for what he did to Rowan, even if it takes awhile.

I see! Some how my link is flawed, unless before 1989 there were some real curve busters. It looks by your link the average is around ten years with 1 being the shortest and 19 being the longest. most are around 10. It is interesting to see the lengths in time shift as the governors change.

In cases where the convicted is undeniably guilty I see no problem with taking them out back right after the trial and putting a bullet in the back of their skull.. No fuss.. Not humanitarian enough? He’ll have died a better death than the little girl he murdered..
