Boston – I know, he’s not a good looking, white woman. But us guys got to stick together. 24-year-old William Hurley and his friend, Brendan Venti, were at a Thursday night Bruins game when Hurley became tired and decided to go home during an intermission. He called his girlfriend, Claire Mahoney, who offered to pick him up. She was on the phone with him as she drove to TD Garden from the University of Massachusetts at Boston, where she is a student. Hurley was unfamiliar with the area, and did not know where to tell Mahoney he was so he asked a passerby the exact address. Mahoney heard someone yell “99 Nashua St“. Hurley told Mahoney that his cell was about to die and that he would wait for her there. No one has seen him since.
When Mahoney arrived at that location, she did not see her boyfriend. She drove around for an hour and decided to head back to the apartment they shared hoping he had found another way home. He did not. Mahoney called police, who told her to wait the standard 24 hours. She then called hospitals and friends to no avail. On Friday, she filed a missing persons report.
Boston police spokesman Joe Zanoli said they had “found no indicators of any foul play, but that possibility can’t be ruled out.” On Sunday, Boston police spokesman James Kenneally said authorities “are still in the process of trying to locate the individual. We encourage anyone who knows anything about Mr. Hurley’s whereabouts to contact police.”
Police are reviewing security camera videotapes from Spaulding Rehab, the Nashua Street jail and parking areas near the TD Garden. They are also searching an area near Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital as well as the Charles River. Hurley is 150 pounds and 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was last seen wearing Nike sneakers, blue jeans, a green T-shirt and a red North FaceNorth Face reviews
jacket. Anyone with information about Hurley’s whereabouts is asked to call the Boston Police Department at 617-343-4248.
I’ve had to wait outside a few jails. Can be a bit skeevy depending on where you are at.
As everyone knows by now, the body of William Hurley’s body was found floating in the Charles River. No foul play is suspected, but the investigation is still ongoing. His cell phone was found smashed in an earlier search of the area he was last seen. There are no fences or barriers at the water’s edge near where Hurley’s body was found.

There is a story or two there, I can tell…….
Can somebody who knows Boston tell us whether having someone wait outside the Nashua Street Jail would be a cause for concern? If anything, I should have thought there were likely to be more CCTVs in the road because of the gaol?

Nashua Street jail is one Boston (Suffolk County) jail. It’s were pre-trial are housed. The craigslist killer is housed there. Location is behind the TD BankNorth Garden and North Station, which is a main commuter rail terminal for to/from the north/northern suburbs. It is a very busy area, but that particular spot is kind of isolated because it’s surrounded by the garden/north station, a hospital, elevated road/bridge, and water; there’s water all around, mostly the Charles River Basin, which feeds into Boston Harbor/Atlantic Ocean. The spot listed is a large parking lot surrounded by everything I just described. There are many cctv cameras in this area because of all the commercial, transportation buildings. It has several subway lines in addition to northern commuter rail.
Mr. Hurley lived south of downtown Boston, in the City of Quincy, which borders Boston. It’s a coastal city, with popular beaches, located around 10 miles south of downtown where he was last seen. If he hopped a subway home he’d have to get on an Orange Line train at North Station, get off at Downtown Crossing and switch to a southbound Red Line train. This was a busy time of day in addition to there being many cctv cameras. He’d show up on multiple cameras without a doubt. He also within very easy access to Logan Airport (about 4 miles away).
Floating bodies are not un-common in the Charles River Basin. Boston Police searched with boats today.

Is that the new name of Boston Gardens/Fleet Center? I haven’t been to Boston in about 7 years, and the Gradens in over 10 but if i remember correctly, that’s a pretty busy, but fairly neutral area…I do not remember a Police Station or Courthouse but again it’s been many years, but I would think outside of ANY police station/courthouse would have it’s share of trouble, just for the fact that criminals clearly need to travel in and out of jail/court in that area.
Anyways, I really hope this kid turns up is fine but it’s been what? 4 days, not lookin good…isnt there some killer on the loose who kills students or some shit..in Canada in NY? I might be makin this shit up but I thought I read here somewhere that there was..anybody?

Yeah, it’s TD Banknorth Garden now.
It is a busy area. But Nashua St like I said is kind of isolated, especially after dark.
The Smiley Face Killers/Gang……allegedly they exist and have been killing guys like Hurley all across the northern U.S. and southern Canada.
This is an odd story. Really, either he:
1) Took off on his own (unlikely, his ATM and credit cards are unused)
2) Random foul play (always possible, statistically unlikely)
3) He’s committed suicide, which would explain the lack of activity with his bank, credit cards
4) He had a freak accident and his body hasn’t been discovered yet
5) Somebody he knows; friend, G.F., know where he is or what happened to him, possibly involving foul play (this statistically would be far more likely than anything involving strangers)
He was possibly at least mildly drunk, and was absolutely dead tired, since he was up since before 5AM, and by that time it was almost 9PM. Probably punch-drunk, making him weary, prone to accidents, errors in judgement.
Whatever happened, it occurred very quickly, within 2-3 minutes, if his G.F. is to be believed.

A pretty large number of people go missing all the time in North America, and many are never heard from again. I bet most deliberately dropped out of sight, but it makes you wonder. Creepy. I saw this story about this 17 year old kid from Nova Scotia in the late 60’s who decided to move to Toronto. His mom and dad occassionally heard from him then everything stopped. Many years went by, decades, then in around 2005 a farmer in Ontario outside Toronto found a skeleton. The cops had a forensic sculptor recreate what she thought the persons face would have looked like. The image was published and someone back in this kids hometown recognized him. Turns out he was the victim of a known serial killer operating in Toronto at that time.

Thanks Hey..
It is just a strange scenario and I was thinking that he might’ve just wantd to get away and left without telling anyone..But why would he call his Girlfriend for a ride? He coulda just left..I definitely suspect foul play, and although it is more statistically likely that he was a victim of someone he knew, for some reason I have a feeling something sinister may have happened..Its just too weird that he would just vanish like that
It makes me think of the opening sequence in every episode of Without a Trace where they disappear into thin air.
Either Way i’d Love More details!

This really does fit the profile of the Smiley Face Killers. Such a pointless tragedy.
6:15 pm on October 14th, 2009
The found him dead in the Charles early this morning. His wallet and keys were on him. So sad. What the hell happened to him?
6:28 pm on October 14th, 2009
I wish I was more familiar with that area. I had hoped someone from around there would find us. It doesn’t make any sense.
6:58 pm on October 14th, 2009
Awwwww… not cool. This was one case that, for whatever reason, I was not expecting to end like this. His poor girlfriend.
I still wonder what prompted him to cut out early. I mean, a 24 year old getting tired in (what is presumably) early evening… tired enough to leave a hockey game early?
I hope that, now that he can’t be found alive, his death can at least be explained.

Morbid—
My friend Mary is from Boston and her mother apparently works right next door to The Garden. What she said is that there is a huge well lit parking lot right where he was and there are a few frat boy type sports bars right next to it. The Purple Shamrock is one that she mentioned. She seemed incredulous that something could happen to him there without anyone seeing it.
Athena: I guess he was tired because he got up everyday at 5 am to work outside. That is what his friend and girlfriend said.
But SOMETHING had to happen to him…..you dont call someone for a ride if you are planning on running away…and according to his friend he had 3 or 4 beers. Thats far from being drunk.
I think the Smiley Face Killer theory is very intriguing. Macabre but intriguing. I mean…..his situation and profile fit it to a tee.
Crazy.
I feel so sorry for his Mother and his girlfriend.

I AM IN BOSTON. IF YOU READ MY PREVIOUS POSTS, YOU’LL SEE I DESCRIBE THE AREA PRETTY WELL.
The Garden/Nashua Street is an area of Boston most people refer to as ‘North Station’ because North Station train station is located there. It is very urban, usually well populated and busy. There are bars, stores, government offices,et al., also in the area. It’s surrounded by urban residential neighborhoods, none of them ‘ghetto’. It’s relatively safe, Boston doesn’t have the kind of crime rate as Baltimore, Detroit, Philly, Atlanta, D.C., et al., it’s a ’safer’ city. Mr. Hurley waited by a large, well lite, but relatively isolated parking lot behind the Garden, N. Station, also opposite Nashua St Jail, the hospital. It’s one-two blocks from the Charles River, where it feeds into the harbor/Ocean. There are parks that line the riverfront. One is Nashua St Park. It’s directly in fron of the jail, one block from the parking lot. This is where he went in. It was dark, ir’s well lite, but relatively isolated especially after dark.
My best guess would be Mr Hurley wasn’t sober, and/or very disoriented/over-tired. For whatever reason he walked down to the river, fell in, couldn’t get back out. The currents are strong.
R.I.P.
8:56 pm on October 14th, 2009
Sorry to people who posted earlier about the location. I should have clarified. I was curious as to the river in relation to where he was last seen. Like, is it possible to fall in or as heyheyhey stated, would he have had to wal to the bank or something. Either way, it still does not make sense.
9:39 pm on October 14th, 2009
Many people here think he was probably drunker than has been admitted to by his ‘friends’, he had to take a leak, and decided to walk one block over to the river to urinate. He lost his balance, fell in. It’s possible. There are no guard-rails. The water is just there as you walk up to it. A very limited sized river ‘bank’. In the dark, it’s possible in his disorientation, that he just accidently walked right into the water. Once he got into the water, it would have been very difficult to get out, especially in darkness and if drunk and/or disoriented.
I personally find it suspicious. You’d really have to be very drunk, high, disoriented, in my experience, to fall into and drown in the river, especially for another-wise healthy young man. Also, he didn’t have to go down to the water to urinate. There were absolutely closer options, even in the parking lot itself.
I agree with most cops and other professionals. Occam’s Razor usually prevails. And I’m not a conspiracy advocate, but the Smiley-Face thing does make me stop and seriously wonder.
9:43 pm on October 14th, 2009
But the smiley face thing has never been proven and the facts that are against it far outweigh any facts that support it. The chances of a drunk man falling into a cold river and drowning are far more likely than a serial killer that has not even been proven to exist, coming across Hurley and killing him in the very small window of time he\she would have had.
9:47 pm on October 14th, 2009
There’s no question young men statistically get themselves into dangerous situations more-so than others. They drink more to excess. They’re more likely to abuse drunks. More likely to engage in risky behavior. More likely to be both perpetrators and victims of violence, including homicides. This would explain why there are many similar examples of Mr. Hurley across North America. I see where the cops are coming from. But it’s still possible foul play, even a conspiracy of multiple homicides targeting young men like Mr. Hurley, is occurring. I’m no expert or pro, but I’d no doubt this type of crime is VERY difficult to get to the bottom of.
9:57 pm on October 14th, 2009
We only hear about police successes by and large. There are MANY crimes, including homicides and serial killings, police don’t solve, sometimes aren’t even aware of.
Well known (now) stuff: a huge number of prostitutes in Vancouver B.C. were killed by a serial killer. It went on for a LONG time. Ditto the Green River Killer in Tacoma-Seattle. John Wayne Gacy and the BTK killer went about their thing for many, many years and were for a very long time went un-suspected and un-noticed. The Zodiac in S.F. has never been solved. Look at that ahole in L.A. who kept that girl hostage for years and years, along with others.
My opinion, anything is possible. Crazy stuff is going on somewhere right now, even as I write this and you read it. It may go completely un-noticed, or un-noticed for a long time.
10:08 pm on October 14th, 2009
I think you are preaching to the choir with that statement. But even here, with all of the crazy stories we put up every single day, I am still more apt to believe that this guy fell or was pushed over a roaming gang of serial killers who drown random college boys and mark the scene of the crime with a smiley face.
10:12 pm on October 14th, 2009
BTW: Mr. Hurley and his companions at the game all traveled by public transportation, in this case subway. Public transit is popular in Boston, probably more-so than most other parts of America. He was up since 5AM, worked all day (in a western suburb of Boston, not near his Quincy crib which is on the south shore, not metro-west; don’t know how he traveled, I assume he drove, got a lift), got back to his crib in Quincy, 10 miles south of the garden. Early evening, he hopped on a train, south to north, back to Boston. Switched over to another to go west to the Boston neighborhood of Brighton. This is easy to do. But, especially at this time of day, VERY crowded, and it’s a bit of a hike. The guys then hopped on a train in Brighton and went back into Boston, to North Station/The Garden. I’m tired just thinking about it.
10:22 pm on October 14th, 2009
Look, I also think the solution to this is mundane; Mr. Hurley accidently fell into and drowned in the river. Unlikely he was pushed or committed suicide. But again, I wouldn’t in my own mind (I know cops, et al., don’t usually leave loose ends, so I’;m not talking about them) rule other stuff completely out. I still frankly have serious problems with various aspects of this story.
10:33 pm on October 14th, 2009
As do I. Mostly the cell phone not being on him and being found crushed. But hearing that there were no barriers where he was found and that it would be pretty easy for him to fall in. I dunno – sounds tragically accidental.
11:42 pm on October 14th, 2009
There’s reports here he and his girl were supposed to get engaged, but put it off for lack of funds, and they were busy saving. Billy and his buddies were allegedly talking about their girl friends on the train into the garden, and according to his buddy, he showed him an engagement ring he was going to give to his girl, but ended up not, for the reasons above.
Another interesting thing is his girl is a college grad and now post-grad; that is she’s a professional. Billy is a groundskeeper at a golf course. Please understand, I’m in no way a snob, I come from nothing myself, but maybe this was becoming an issue to them or to one of them.
When people drink, suffer from sleep deprivation, which it clearly sounds like Billy was, this stuff can all add up and create a really negative mental state, a perfect storm. Maybe he was indeed depressed (in my opinion most people get seriously depressed/suicidal over relationships and things to do with their private life by far more than anything else) and on the spur of the moment decided to end it. I know many suicides find an isolated place where they can be alone when they do it, so going down to the river fits. It’s weird, dogs do the same thing; when they know they’re about to die, they wander off and try and find a private spot if possible.

Sorry I am so late checking in: Thanks, Heyheyhey! A local eye on this is very helpful…….
Sad to see a young life ended like this. I wonder what LE will conclude?
5:08 pm on October 22nd, 2009
I do not believe that this guy walked into the river and drowned accidently or on purpose. She was on the phone with him and AROUND the corner. She says she doesn’t even understand how they could have possibly missed each other. If you are ready to off yourself why would you call your girlfriend for a ride? And furthermore, why would he just wander to the water and fall in if she was rounding the corner to pick him up. It doesn’t make any sense. Tired is tired. But he had no reason to even walk away from the area that he was in with her so close to him.
