was working at one of his three jobs – jobs he worked so that Jenny could stay home with little William. As Jenny put Will to bed, evil broke into the Nelson home. Charlie W. Myers, 22, shot and killed Jennifer Nelson in front of her little boy. He then stole two computers – and Will.
The murder of Jenny Nelson probably started the week before Christmas, when Charlie Myers allegedly stole the Nelson’s car from a local parking garage. It seems likely that he got documents from the car with the home address inside, and that Myers went to the home on Friday night to steal some more.
When confronted by Jenny Nelson in the home, Charlie Myers shot her to death. He then grabbed the computers and some other items which have not been released, picked up little Will, and headed out in the Nelson’s other car. After driving along I-70 toward Columbus for some time, Myers made his only good decision of the evening: he pulled over at a rest stop and let William out of the car. Then he drove off.
Enter Mike and Judith McConnell. When they pulled into the rest stop on Friday night, they spotted a little boy looking upset and confused. When the Maryland couple saw that there was no adult around, they approached Will and asked him if he was lost.
“I began asking him questions, and he told me that a stranger had come into his house without knocking,” said Mike McConnell. “And I said ‘Well, where was your mommy?’ And he said ‘He shot my mommy.”‘
Will knew his address and his phone number and was able to give the police accurate information about where he lived and what had happened. Police rushed to the Nelson’s Harrison Township home, where their worst fears were confirmed – Jennifer Nelson lay dead on the floor, the victim of at least one gunshot wound. Eddie Nelson was called at work and told to get home.
“The best thing (William) did for us was told us where he lived, gave us the address, told us what happened, what he’d seen … gave us a description of the suspect,” said Sheriff Phil Plummer of the Montgomery Co. Sheriff’s Office. “So you know that’s a great job by the young man … I’m impressed with how sharp he was.”
By Sunday evening, police had recovered both stolen vehicles. The car stolen just before Christmas was found at a local flea market. The Nelson’s other car was found not far from the crime scene. Tips combined with evidence and Will’s statements led police to Myers. One of the computers stolen from the Nelson home has already been recovered. Sheriff Plummer says that the motive is probably robbery, and that while Myers has “admitted involvement” in the murder, “he remains unremorseful”.
Charlie W. Myers is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail in Columbus, Ohio, where he is being held on suspicion of aggravated murder. He is expected to be charged today or tomorrow.
UPDATE 1/06/09 – Charlie Myers has now been charged with aggravated murder, two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of kidnapping and one count each of gross sexual imposition, grand theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and having weapons while under disability (Myers is hearing impaired).
SexSEX toys and bloody underwear were found at the scene, so it’s a certainty that Nelson was raped. In addition, new information has been released that the car stolen December 17 was unlocked and contained house keys and a wallet with identification inside. We’ll keep you posted as new developments come up.

This is one of those “worst nightmare” stories, as it’s just so completely random. And, of course, the Nelson family sounds like a great family. Kudos to that smart little boy and the parents who raised him.
I’d be curious to know more about Myers, and whether he’s got a criminal history. This was a pretty brazen crime; all the moreso because he took the boy.

Fascinatingly, his myspace says he attended Ohio School for the Deaf from 2002-2004. If he’s deaf, it was an even more brazen crime, in that he couldn’t hope to communicate well with Jennifer or the little boy. But the article didn’t mention him being deaf, and it seems like it would be noteworthy. Hmmmm…..?

My understanding is that Charlie Myers is hearing impaired. But as the sister-in-law of a brilliant girl who is also hearing-impaired, I have learned that anything a hearing person can do, a non-hearing person can do, and I guess I just didn’t think it was relevant.
Charlie may have communicated just fine via signing or wrtiting. In fact, he may well be able to speak. But it does explain why he didn’t know Jenny and Will were in the house. I don’t think he intended on doing any communicating at all.

Oh man- I just broke the news to Charlie’s friend- they have known each other since kindergarten and he told her he loved her a while ago- she says she is in shock and he is such a kind person and he would never do something like this – she said he was never violent and yes, he is deaf.
I feel so bad for this girl. I believe she is deaf as well.

Yes, I am well acquainted with the deaf community, as well, and I know he could well be capable of communicating his wishes. But communication is a two-way-street, and it would have been difficult for him to know what Jennifer or Will were saying to him — especially during the frantic tension of a crime. It’s unlikely they happened to know ASL.
In any event, I think that your supposition that he might not have expected them to be home, and didn’t realize they were until he stumbled upon them, might be dead on. And would be well-explained by his impairment.

The people that do stuff like this are always nice people. Right up until the moment they do something like this.
What impressed me about this story was that the kid knew his address and phone number. I’m 33 years old and I have to ask the wife or check my cell phone for five minutes before I can come up with either.
I was also shocked that the kid even knew that it was his daddy that was shot, then I looked back up and saw the family is white.

Wow, this really does seem even more senseless than usual. I’ve never heard of anyone grabbing the kid for no good reason as they left. That just strikes me as particularly strange. I guess I’m glad he didn’t kill the kid and the poor baby wasn’t left alone with his mother’s body–and I’m really happy those good people found him and he was able to communicate so well. But really, talk about brazen and just plain weird!

Pardon me for quoting myself but thought of the murder – “Vaughan Family” murder – hasn’t come to trial yet but was horrific. Never did get much press. (???)
Also, the chick that’s on right b4 Nancy Grace/same channel had someone on a panel kind of hint that perhaps there is more to THIS case than it appears – that perhaps deaf slow boy had help and perhaps that help was THE HUB/DAD – thought it was suspicious that he left his wallet and all this ID in the car that the kid stole from the parking garage Christmas Week.

DAYTON, Ohio—A man is facing 18 charges, including aggravated murder after a woman was fatally shot and her son apparently was abducted.
Authorities arrested 22-year-old Charlie Myers of Columbus on suspicion of aggravated murder Monday. Officials announced Tuesday that Myers is charged with aggravated murder with underlying offenses, including two counts of aggravated robbery, four counts of kidnapping and one count each of gross sexual imposition, grand theft of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and having weapons while under disability.
The 4-year-old boy, William, was found Friday at a rest stop off Interstate 70 by a traveling couple.
William told the couple his mom had been shot and the gunman left him there.
When police went to William’s Dayton-area home, they found 29-year-old Jennifer Nelson shot to death and her vehicle missing.
Franklin County deputies found what they believed was Nelson’s vehicle, a black Oldsmobile Alero, along West Broad Street near the Westland Flea Market Sunday. That was about 25 miles from the rest stop where the boy was found.
Franklin County deputies took the car to search it for evidence.
Detectives said the victim’s cell phone was used twice after her death and that those calls were traced to Myers’ home at 70 McMillen Ave.
Myers and his two roommates were taken into questioning from Myers’ home Sunday night.
Montgomery County Sheriff Phil Plummer said Myers confessed to involvement in the murder of Jennifer but wouldn’t say to what extent.
The sheriff’s office said Myers was the one who dropped off 4-year-old William at the rest stop.
The sheriff’s office told Diedrich authorities think Myers became involved after Jennifer’s car was stolen out of an OSU parking garage on Dec. 17 while she was at a concert. An ID and house keys were inside the vehicle at the time.
Plummer said those items mostly likely led Myers to her home Friday night.
Authorities would not release a possible motive and didn’t say whether Myers was connected to the Nelson family in any way.
Plummer said this was one of the most bizarre cases he’s ever seen.
Plummer said, at this time, Jennifer’s husband, Eddie Nelson, was not a suspect.
All charges include mandatory three-year firearm specifications, and a panel of prosecutors will convene in the near future to discuss whether death penalty specifications should be added to the charges against Myers for the Montgomery County Grand Jury’s consideration.
