Jared MarchianoBERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ – Authorities say 17-year-old Jared Marchiano was killed when a stone slab weighing about 650 pounds fell on him outside a business that makes countertops.

The teen was found by a passing motorist at around 6:40 a.m. Saturday at Stone N’ Counters South in Berkeley Township. According to Ocean County prosecutors, Marchiano was trying to walk between marble and granite slabs when a stone slab fell on top of him.

“Preliminarily, the way it looks, it was a tremendously tragic accident where the young fellow was trying to squeeze or walk between the two slabs and they became dislodged,” Al Della Fave. “Once it fell on him, no one was around to get it off.”

It’s not clear how long he’d been trapped under the stone slab before he was spotted and police were called. Marchiano was pronounced dead shortly after authorities arrived on scene.

The business, which is 10 minutes from the teen’s family home, was closed when the accident occurred, so it’s not clear why the teen was even at the site in the first place. …

Crushed CardboardWINTER GARDEN, FL – According to reports, 43-year-old David Rossman net a horrific end after he fell into a cardboard compactor while trying to clear a jam, and was subsequently crushed to death by the machine.

On Monday, Rossman was working at a Robert Wallick Associates, a recycling facility, when a machine that compacts cardboard became jammed. As Rossman tried to clear the jam, he fell in the machine and “got compacted in a stack of cardboard.”

The machine is 12 feet tall and you need to climb a ladder needed to reach the top. Several other employees were working at the time of the accident but none of them saw Rossman fall in. The machine was still running when his body was discovered.

Fire crews were called and were able to get Rossman out of the machine about 15 minutes later. According to Winter Garden police Lt. Scott Allen, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration is now investigating and will determine if the business was following the appropriate safety measures.…

Bonney Lake BridgeBONNEY LAKE, WA – A mother, father and their infant son were crushed to death when a concrete wall fell from a state Route 410 overpass under renovation and landed on the family’s truck.

East Pierce Fire & Rescue officials said the accident happened before 11 a.m. Monday when concrete and other materials fell off the overpass and landed on the family’s pickup as they drove down Angeline Road East.

It took crews almost eight hours to remove the debris from the truck and realize that there were three people dead inside. Their names have not been released, but police say they were a couple in their 20s and their 6-month-old baby.

No word on how the “very heavy” concrete structure fell, but a construction crew had been working on a project to replace and extend a sidewalk on that overpass. The part that fell was part of the original overpass, which was built in 1992.

“The type of work that was going on shouldn’t have resulted in anything falling,” said Bonney Lake Public Works Director Dan Grigsby.…

Lindsey CombsMARTINEZ, CA – Lindsey Combs, 32, was killed in her driveway Monday afternoon when a truck carrying gravel tipped over onto her car, crushing her to death in front of her 4-year-old daughter.

A construction crew working on the road had asked Combs to pull her car up further into her driveway to make room for a gravel truck.

As Combs was moving her car, 20 tons of gravel inside the truck’s trailer shifted, causing the trailer to flip on top of Combs’ car as her 4-year-old daughter watched.

Members of the construction crew attempted to help Combs, but having 20 tons of anything land on top of you isn’t something you walk away from.

“Myself and the guys that were working on the side of the road were trying to dig her out,” Travis Hagerty said. “A guy with a backhoe came around and ripped the door off the car with the backhoe after he picked the trailer up. That’s when I looked in the car and saw she was smashed and dead.”

Cal/OSHA is now investigating the incident.…

Jim KarrCHICAGO, IL – Jim Karr, a well known figure in the specialty coffee community, died on Saturday after a commercial coffee machine he was taking down fell on top of him.

The 48-year-old was at an event at Grant Park dismantling the coffee machine when he lost his balance. Karr grabbed the machine to prevent from falling and the machine fell on top of his head and body, said police.

He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later from multiple crushing injuries to his head and chest. His death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

From what I can gather, Karr was kind of a big deal within the coffee community. He was a technician who installed, repaired and modified coffee brewing equipment, and considered by some as the best in the country. His company, SteamVolt, was dedicated to “advancing the mechanics of craft coffee.”

“In terms of the work Jim did, he was one of the very few in the country that was known as being a top expert at what he did,” said Nicholas Cho, of Wrecking Ball Coffee Roasters.…

Aura GarciaBOSTON, MA – A 43-year-old mother of two was crushed to death on New Year’s Eve as she walked across a Boston drawbridge.

Aura Garcia was on her way to a doctor’s appointment as she walked across the Meridian Street bridge, a drawbridge that crosses over the Chelsea River, when it began to rise to let a boat pass underneath. According to police spokesman David Estrada, Garcia “was probably halfway across the bridge when it started to open. She was in a blind spot where (the operator) could not see her.”

Another pedestrian told investigators that before the bridge began to rise she heard a loud foghorn and saw the bridge’s blinking lights before hearing Garcia screaming over and over again. The bridge operator heard her screams as well, and immediately began lowering the bridge back in place.

What the operator didn’t know was that Garcia’s lower body had slipped through the gap made at the lower hinge of the bridge, and she was holding on to a handrail to keep from falling into the river below.

Alicante-Elche airportMadrid, Spain – A five-month-old baby died after his head was crushed on an airport luggage belt.

A 32-year-old American woman arrived at the Alicante-Elche airport late Wednesday on a flight from London’s Gatwick airport with her baby and another young child. Her husband, a Canadian, was waiting for her in another part of the airport.

The woman made her way to the baggage area where she was retrieving items from a baggage carousel that holds over-sized bags and items like car seats, strollers, etc. The carousel only moves in one direction and is only activated when items are placed on top of it.

According to sources, the woman placed or dropped her baby on the conveyor belt when she climbed up to retrieve a pushchair that had become stuck. The belt started moving after the sensors detected something had been placed on top of it, and within seconds, the baby’s head was crushed in a 10cm gap where two baggage belts converged.

To help better form that horrific mental image going on in your head, here’s a picture of the gap between the two belts.…

pinsitterPanama City, FL – William Martens was performing some maintenance work at Rockit Lanes Sunday afternoon when he somehow got crushed by a bowling pin machine.

According to News Channel 7, a family had been using lane 7 when the pinsetter malfunctioned. The family were moved to lane 8 while Martens worked on the malfunctioning machine.

The family was moved back to lane 7 after it had been repaired and because lane 8 had also malfunctioned. When the family could not get lane 7 to reset, they kept hitting the lane reset button. They stopped doing that when a woman in their group looked down the lane and saw an arm hanging out of the machine.

An employee rushed to the area behind the lanes and found Marten’s upper body trapped in the pinsetter machine. Employees had to call another mechanic who informed them how to turn off the machine and how to manually crank the machine off of Martens.

By time EMS arrived and assisted several other employees in getting Martens freed, the man had been trapped for almost 15 minutes and was not breathing.…

Samuel CabreraPhiladelphia, PA – Police have accused 27-year-old Samuel Cabrera of beating his infant son to the point that all of the baby’s abdominal organs had been crushed.

Samuel Cabrera Jr. was rushed to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in critical condition, suffering from two broken collar bones, a ruptured spleen, a ruptured liver and crushed organs. The boy would end up dying from his injuries to days later.

Police say when they interviewed the couple about the boy’s injuries, they gave conflicting accounts of what happened.  The mother told detectives they found their baby pale and unconscious and the bruising was caused by her and Cabrera performing CPR on the infant.

Cabrera told police a different story. He said he was trying to knock the family dog off the bed and accidentally hit the baby. Eventually Cabrera would admit to killing his son and was subsequently arrested and charged with murder.

Although the mother has not been charged,  her three children from a previous relationship and Cabrera’s 15-month-old daughter are now living with relatives. …
