A 1-year-old boy was shot and killed in Pittsburgh's Spring Hill-City View neighborhood Monday evening.
Police said the child, Zykier Young, was sleeping in bed when a bullet fired outside went into the home.
"He was caught in the crossfire. It was basically a shootout is what we're seeing here, multiple shooters," Cmdr. Victor Joseph said at a news conference Tuesday.
"We will do everything we can with our resources to find out who did this and bring them to justice. We owe it to that baby. We owe it to that family and we owe it to the community," Police Chief Scott Schubert said.
Attorney Paul Jubas, who is a spokesperson for the family, released a statement from the family on Tuesday night.
“The family of Zykier Young appreciates the outpouring of support from the community. Words cannot explain our grief at this moment. Please, if anyone has information regarding the shooting, contact either our family or the police. We will be sure to respect the anonymity of anyone willing to come forward with information. Please help us find Justice for Zykier. Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days.”
According to a press release from Pittsburgh Public Safety, police took the child to the hospital. The press release said, "With a police sergeant driving, two police officers held the baby in the backseat and worked to control the bleeding. The child arrived at the hospital in critical condition."
Zykier later died of his injuries at Allegheny General Hospital.
According to investigators, the gunshots were fired outside, with one round going through a window and then two walls before hitting the child.
Police said Zykier was not a target of the shooters, and neither was his family.
Police are seeking the public's help to find Zykier's killer.
"We can't do this by ourself. We have never done this by ourself. You have always stood with us, and we need you to stand with us today," Assistant Chief Lavonnie Bickerstaff said.
"A child laying in their bed shot by people who are intent on committing violence in our city is unacceptable, and I can tell you we will do everything we can with our resources to find out who did this and bring them to justice," Schubert said.
