Lottie BelkVIRGINIA BEACH, VA – A woman celebrating her birthday has died after being stabbed in the chest by a beach umbrella that had been caught in the wind.

According to police, 56-year-old Lottie Belk was at the beach celebrating her upcoming birthday and wedding anniversary when a beach umbrella got caught in a strong gust of wind and struck her in the chest.

“Literally you saw the umbrella go up in the air and literally it hit the woman knocking her to the side,” said one witness concerned anyone would take anything he said figuratively.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they found Belk suffering from life-threatening injuries. She was pronounced dead after being transported to a local hospital. The state medical examiner’s office determined Belk died from penetrating blunt force trauma to the chest, and would rule her death an accident.

According to Tom Gill, the Captain of the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service, he’s heard of people getting injured by loose umbrellas but this is the first time he has ever heard of someone being killed by one.…

Colin ScottYELLOWSTONE – A 23-year-old man died after he wandered hundreds of yards off a designated boardwalk at Yellowstone and fell into a hot spring at the Norris Geyser Basin.

On Tuesday, Colin Scott and his sister hiked approximately 225 yards off the designated boardwalk near Pork Chop Geyser when Scott slipped and fell into a thermal geyser.

His sister alerted rangers who returned to the scene, which was in an area so remote that the park airplane and helicopter had trouble finding it, but there wasn’t much they could do.

Because of the high temperatures, all that could be recovered were some of Scott’s personal effects that were near the spot he fell in. By Wednesday, rangers determined there were no longer any remains of Scott left to recover and abandoned the search.

The spot where Scott fell in is one of the hottest and most volatile areas of Yellowstone, where the water that flows beneath a thin rock crust is 400 degrees or more.

“We extend our sympathy to the Scott family,” said Superintendent Dan Wenk.…

Maria StrydomMOUNT EVEREST – A woman from Australia who said she was climbing Mount Everest to prove that “vegans can do anything” died on the mountain on Saturday after developing altitude sickness.

Maria Strydom, 34, was a finance lecturer at Monash University living on a vegan diet. She posted on the university’s blog that she and her husband were climbing Mount Everest to prove a point.

“It seems that people have this warped idea of vegans being malnourished and weak,” Strydom said. “By climbing the seven summits we want to prove that vegans can do anything and more.”

Strydom was climbing towards the summit on Friday when she became ill and had to turn back to camp. The rest of the group, including her husband, continued on and are believed to have reached the summit.

After spending the night at the camp, Strydom’s condition deteriorated and she died before a rescue team could reach her. Her husband, who also became sick, was taken to a lower camp and then to a Nepal hospital where he is expected to recover.…

Lisa LambeUTAH – A 55-year-old woman died from blunt force trauma injuries she suffered while taking part in the Sundance Mountain Resort ZipTour.

Lisa Lambe and her husband were were vacationing in Utah and decided to take the zip line tour at the Sundance Mountain Resort on Friday.

The attraction consists of five different zip lines and participants can reach speeds of 65 mph. Lambe failed to reach the end of the final zip line and was found suspended in her harness, unconscious and not breathing.

She had suffered serious injuries, including bruises and broken bones along the right side of her body, Utah County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Spencer Cannon said. She was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Wind gusts reached 52 mph that day, so it is believed Lambe may have struck a tree on the way down the final leg of the tour. I watched a video on Youtube that someone took while riding all five of the zip lines, and at around the 3:32 mark he does zip through some trees before sailing over a parking lot.…

Elizabeth GilreathOMAHA, NE – An 11-year-old girl has been hospitalized after her hair got caught in a carnival ride and ended up getting scalped.

Elizabeth Gilreath was with friends and family at a Cinco de Mayo festival on Saturday afternoon when she got on the King’s Crown carnival ride.

Witnesses say Gilreath slipped out of her seat and her long hair got caught in the spinning ride’s machinery, completely ripping the hair and skin off her head.

“It went on for 5-10 minutes everybody told me while it ripped and pulled my daughter around,” her father said. “She was tortured.”

Surveillance video shows the ride operator running away, presumably to look for help, while bystanders rushed to help the girl who was bleeding profusely.

“It was still spinning,” said Jolene Cisneros. “I had to stop it with my hands and turn it to the point where it was to the platform.”

Gilreath was taken to Nebraska Medicine where she has undergone several surgeries to reattach her scalp.

Her mother made a post on Facebook with a post-op photos of her daughter that shows the true extent of the girl’s injuries.…

Patrice PriceMILWAUKEE, WI – The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office say a woman was killed while driving down Highway 175 after a child in the backseat got his hands on a gun and shot her in the back.

Police responded to the scene Tuesday morning and found 26-year-old Patrice Price with a single gunshot wound to her back.

Despite life-saving efforts by police and paramedics, the mother of three was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to her father, the car Price was driving belonged to her boyfriend who works as a security guard. He had left his gun inside the vehicle and Price’s 2-year-old son found it and shot his mother from the backseat.

Price’s death comes less than two months after we reported on a Florida mom who was driving when she was shot in the back by her kid.

In that case, 31-year-old Jamie Gilt was driving when her 4-year-old son found a loaded handgun and shot his mother from the backseat. Gilt, a vocal gun enthusiast, survived her injuries but may be facing a misdemeanor charge of allowing a child to access a firearm.…

Roquel BainLOUISVILLE, KY – Roquel Bain was killed after being stuck by a train while investigating the mythical Pope Lick Monster – a half-man, half-goat creature that tricks people into getting hit by a train.

Bain, 26, and her boyfriend came to Louisville from Dayton, Ohio on Saturday to take part in a paranormal tour scheduled from 10 p.m. to midnight. Before the tour started, the couple decided to investigate the Pope Lick Monster.

The creature reportedly lives under the Pope Lick train trestle and lures people to their deaths by having them walk on the trestle, which stands 80 to 100 feet high, and get hit by an oncoming train.

As the couple were walking along the trestle, a Norfolk Southern train came barreling towards them at around 30 mph. Realizing they did not have time to run for safety, the couple decided to hang from the sides of trestle until the train passed.

The train’s engineer sounded his horn and put on the brakes, but it would be too late for Bain who, unlike her boyfriend, was unable to clear the tracks in time. …

Claudia MelgarHOUSTON, TX – CCTV video captured the moment 25-year-old Claudia Melgar ignored warnings and drove into a flooded underpass and drowned while frantically trying to escape her vehicle.

Early Monday morning, Melgar sent a text to her mother letting her know she was heading home from a club and asked if she needed anything from the store.

On the way home, Melgar ended up at the Post Oak Exit on the Westpark Tollway. This road had been blocked with a barrier and a tow truck as the underpass had flooded.

Melgar ignored the warnings and squeeze by the truck Bill Smiers, a member of the Harris County Toll Road Authority’s Incident Response Team, was sitting in. He tried stopping her and even tried chasing her down to stop her from going any further.

For whatever reason, Melgar continued down the street and into the waters that was reportedly 17-feet deep at its most flooded.Melgar’s SUV almost immediately starts floating before losing power.

In the video you can see Melgar using her cell phone as a light that she begins waving around more frantically as her vehicle starts to sink.…

Roselynn 'Rosie' Mae HannaGAHANNA, OH – A 3-year-old girl has died after she was accidentally strangled by a window blind cord.

Last week, Whitney Hanna called 911 to report she had found her daughter, Roselynn ‘Rosie’ Mae Hanna, unconscious and not breathing.

Hanna said she had left her daughter unattended for five minutes while she tended to her 2-year-old son in another room. When she returned, she found Rosie lying on the living room floor with a window blind cord wrapped around her neck.

She performed CPR on her daughter until paramedics arrived minutes later. Rosie was rushed to the hospital where she would be pronounced dead four days later – which also happens to be her 6-year-old sister’s birthday.

Kids dying after getting tangled up in window blind cords is a lot more common than I thought. We’ve reported on one or two incidents over the years, but according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 600 children have been strangled by window blind cords over the past 30 years. That’s almost one child for every month.…

Jamie GiltPUTNAM COUNTY, FL – A pro-gun activist was shot in the back while driving after her 4-year-old son found her handgun in the backseat of her vehicle.

According to reports, 31-year-old Jamie Gilt was driving down the road when her son found a handgun in the backseat. The boy fired the gun and the bullet traveled through the back of the driver’s seat and entered Gilt’s back.

Gilt pulled over and was noticed by a passing police officer who stopped to offer assistance. Gilt was taken to a hospital in stable condition and her son was placed with family members. The Department of Children and Families has been contacted but, at this time, the shooting is being investigated as accidental.

However, Capt. Joseph Wells said investigators are trying to determine how the boy got his hands on the gun and if he was fastened to his booster seat at the time of the shooting.

“There was a booster seat in the back of the vehicle, but however the boy was not strapped in when the deputy got to them,” Wells said.…

DarwinCONCRETE, WA – A 43-year-old man died over the weekend after he accidentally shot himself in the face while taking selfies with a gun.

The man was with his girlfriend at a residence where they were each taking pictures of themselves holding the gun.

The girlfriend said that they had done this several times throughout the day and that the dead man had repeatedly unloaded and loaded the gun.

However, the last time the man posed with the gun he was unaware he had left a bullet in the chamber. He ended up with a new hole to his head that severely hindered his ability to be alive anymore, and the gene pool got another drop of chlorine.

Skagit County Sheriff’s Office Chief of Patrol Chad Clark said no charges will be filed at this time and that the death is being investigated as accidental.

Not surprisingly, this is not the first person we’ve reported on who fatally shot themselves while taking selfies with a gun.

Last year, 19-year-old Deleon Smith accidentally shot himself in the throat while taking selfies with a gun.…

Jaina McGloghlonPORTLAND, OR – Jaina McGloghlon was found suffocated with a balloon over her head after the 8-year-old attended a children’s birthday party.

The girl’s father, Mike McGloghlon, said his daughter had gone to bed after participating in a children’s birthday party held at the home.

When he went to check on her later, he found Jaina with a three-foot Mylar balloon over her head.

“He took the covers off and found the balloon on her head,” said the child’s grandfather, who was in the home. “The only thing we could think is that she opened it, to suck the helium out and put it over her head and she suffocated.”

Mike cut off the balloon and performed CPR for an hour until emergency services arrived. Unfortunately, Jaina died. Officials have ruled her death an accident and there will not be an official investigation.

Did you know the Consumer Product Safety Commission claims that balloons are the leading cause of death by suffocation among children in the US? Me neither.

But before you parents freak out, that’s only 110 children who have died between 1973 and 2011 — and most of those deaths involved deflated or broken pieces of balloons.…
