thunder-river-rapidsGOLD COAST, AU – Police have confirmed four people were killed at a Dreamworld theme park in Australia after a water ride malfunctioned.

The accident happened on Tuesday as riders were on the Thunder River Rapids water ride — a ride in which patrons are sent around a course while sitting in rafts that look like six chairs on a giant inner tube.

At the end of the course, the rafts are lifted out of the water on an incline by a conveyor belt. That’s when one of the rafts up-ended and threw two men, aged 35 and 38, and two women, aged 42 and 32, out of the raft.

Initial reports say two of the victims were crushed by another raft that came up behind the one that had tipped over, while the other two were killed after falling into the ride’s machinery. Early reports say the victims were all from the same family.

The Thunder River Rapids ride has been in operation since 1986 and considered one of the tamest rides in the park (you can see just how tame in this video).…

barstoolBIRMINGHAM, AL — A fifth-grader in suffered an embarrassing injury in her school’s cafeteria after she went to sit down on a barstool and did not realize there was no seat attached to the pole.

According to Stacy Minnifield, she was called to her 10-year-old daughter’s school by the school nurse who informed her that her daughter had been impaled by a metal pole in the lunchroom.

“She let me know that they got into the lunchroom, she got a tray, she got ready to sit down and didn’t notice that it didn’t have a barstool there,” Minnifield said. “She plopped down, immediately felt the pole, and that’s when she started to hurt.”

Minnifield went to the school and took her daughter to the hospital after finding the pole had torn through her pants and impaled her rectum.

“We discovered it was both rectal and towards that front area/private area,” Minnifield said.

Minnifield said her daughter is expected to make a full recovery, but the physical injuries isn’t the only thing she will have to recover from.…

leonardo-sanchezWEST JORDAN, UT – Here’s some nightmare fuel for any of you with children in daycare. A 1-year-old boy suffocated under a bean bag chair as a daycare worker sat on it and read a story to other children.

On Sept 8, Leonardo Sanchez was at the West Jordan Child Center when he crawled under a bean bag chair to hide. A female daycare worker, unaware Leonardo was under the chair, sat in it and began reading a story to the other children.

Surveillance camera footage shows it was 15 minutes before it was realized Leonardo was missing and was located under the bean bag chair. Attempts were made to resuscitate the boy at the daycare, but he would be pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

His parents are understandably upset and want to know how something like this could have happened to their son, who would have celebrated his second birthday this Saturday. A day that will now be the boy’s funeral.

“I’m just confused on how you don’t know where my kid is.…

Jim PetersenDRAPER, UT — Authorities say 57-year-old Jim Peterson died after the paramotorist crashed through the roof of an LDS church in Draper.

The accident happened Sunday morning during services for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 272 E. Traverse Point.

Steven Howlett said he and Peterson took off together from the Point of the Mountain and were flying alongside each other as they have for the last three years.

Peterson had more gas than Howlett, so when Howlett decided to land, Peterson kept going.

It’s not clear what malfunctioned with Peterson’s paramotor, but shortly after the two separated Peterson was seen spinning rapidly in a free-fall.

“We have heard reports that there might have been a collapse of the chute,” said Sergeant Chad Carpenter with Draper Police. “We don’t have that confirmed yet though.”

Peterson ended up crashing through the roof of the LDS church while dozens of people were inside. No one inside the church was hurt, but there was nothing that could be done for Peterson.…

Debra HarbeckALBUQUERQUE, NM – The family of 56-year-old Debra Harbeck are suing a nightclub after Harbeck choked and died during a corn dog eating contest at the establishment.

The incident happened back in January when Debra Harbeck was out celebrating her daughter’s 22nd birthday.

While they were drinking at the Fire and Ice nightclub, Harbeck entered into a corn dog eating contest where contestants got on their knees in front of men who were holding corn dogs near their groin area.

The person who ate the corn dog the fastest would win a prize to go along with whatever dignity they had left. Unfortunately for Harbeck, the eager beaver she bit off a bit more than she could chew.

According to the complaint, Harbeck began choking on the corn dog, leading to patrons applying the Heimlich maneuver and CPR before paramedics arrived. The lack of oxygen to her brain caused irreparable brain damage and she would die at the hospital the next day.

Now her daughter, father and her grandmother are suing the club along with anyone connected to the property and its liquor license. …

swimming poolPUEBLO, CO – Two sisters — ages 3 and 5 — and their 17-year-old female baby sitter drowned in a mobile home park swimming pool Monday afternoon.

Police responded to the Pueblo Grande Village mobile home park shortly after 2 p.m. yesterday after receiving a call about a drowning.

“Upon arrival, officers located three individuals who appeared to have drown in a swimming pool,” police said in a news release.

Despite attempting CPR on 3-year-old Azucena Gandarilla; her 6-year-old sister Amaya Gandarilla; and their 17-year-old baby sitter, Joo Lee, all three would later be pronounced dead by the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office.

Residents say the pool is normally packed with kids in the summertime and ranges from 2 to 8 feet deep. There are also signs posted that warn people to swim at their own risk as there are no lifeguards at the pool.

According to Capt. Joe Garcia of the Pueblo Police Department, an investigation into the drownings is ongoing but no foul play is suspected.

“I think it’s just a horrible tragedy,” Garcia said.…

Caleb Thomas SchwabKANSAS CITY, KS – Caleb Thomas Schwab, son of Republican member of the Kansas House of Representatives Scott Schwab, was killed Sunday at the Schlitterbahn Water Park while on the park’s 168-foot water slide.

For those of you unaware of the Verruckt water slide,  riders sit in a three-person raft and are secured with a velcro-type seat belt across the waist and shoulders. The combined weight of riders per raft must be between 400 and 550 pounds

The raft then goes down a 168 foot drop before going back and then down a 50 foot drop. Here’s a first-person video of the ride for those interested.

An official cause of the accident and Caleb’s injuries have not been released, but witnesses say the 10-year-old flew into the air after the first steep drop, causing him to hit safety netting located on the sides of the slide.

Hitting the net caused Caleb to suffer some kind of traumatic injury, as video from a news helicopter showed a significant amount of blood had pooled at the bottom the the slide.…

Robert HerweyerSAUGATUCK, MI – Authorities say a medical episode or fumes may have contributed to the death of 23-year-old Robert Herweyer who drowned in a vat of molasses last week.

On July 26, Herweyer and a co-worker were pumping molasses out of a 12-foot plastic vat at the Agri-Science Technology Company.

When the molasses got to about two feet deep, Herweyer put on a safety mask and used straps attached to a forklift to climb down into the tank to adjust a valve.

According to the co-worker, when Herweyer grabbed the straps to climb back out, he didn’t move and would not respond to him asking if he was ok.

When the co-worker found he was unable to life Herweyer out of the tank with the straps, he ran to their boss’ office for help.

Their boss, David Alexander, used an electric saw to cut the tank open and pull Herweyer out of the vat and start performing CPR. But it was too late.

Reports say that Herweyer was on his back in the tank and his safety mask was barely visible.…

Taylor TerrellMACON, GA – Georgia news anchor Taylor Terrell died the day before her 25th birthday after falling over a North Carolina waterfall.

On Thursday, Terrell was with a friend at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, wading in the waters at the top of Rainbow Falls.

At some point Terrell’s friend noticed she was no longer in the water. After being unable to locate her, the friend called 911.

“Hi, I’m at Rainbow Falls. My friend got caught by the current, and I don’t know where she is, and I can’t find her,” the friend can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and located Terrell’s body four hours later at the bottom of the 185 foot waterfall. The U.S. Forest Service said Terrell lost her footing and was swept over the falls by the current.

Terrell anchored 41NBC News at Daybreak and 41Today. The station released the following statement:

“Taylor was a hard worker with a bright smile. She rose through the ranks from intern to reporter, to weekend anchor, to morning anchor and was eager to prepare for her next chapter.…

Seth KrebbeksMACEDON, NY – Police say 15-year-old Seth Krebbeks died after a large BBQ grill broke loose from a camper and slammed into the car he was riding in.

The accident happened Saturday at around 5:15 p.m. on Route 31. According to investigators, the grill was attached to a camper driven by Jason Mark who was headed eastbound.

Mark hit a bump near a bridge that caused the grill to become wobbly. When Mark hit a second bump, the grill detached from the tow hitch and become airborne and smashed into a car driving westbound.

The driver of that car, Jared Jones, was flown to the hospital and has since been released. His passenger, Krebbeks, would die from his injuries.

Police said their investigation is ongoing, and it isn’t yet clear whether any charges will be filed against Mark. They did say that a preliminary investigation indicated the tow hitch was applied to the camper properly.

This reminds me of another story involving things becoming disconnected on a New York highway – with much more devastating results.…

Rowdy RadfordSARGENT, TX – A 15-year-old lost a leg, some fingers and potentially his eyesight, after a homemade explosive he created blew up in his hand Saturday night.

Rowdy Radford was at his aunt’s house when he took 180 sparklers and wrapped them tightly together with electrical tape, creating the ever-popular sparkler bomb.

To see just how powerful these homemade explosives are, take a look at a couple YouTube videos made by other morons. According to the teen’s aunt, Radford is known for making sparkler bombs every year.

“Rowdy has always been known for making his booms and he makes his booms by scaring everybody,” said his aunt Samantha Hansen, who looks like she’d be pretty fun after a night of bar-hopping. Call me.

But this “boom” would be the most memorable yet. As Radford bent down to light it, the device exploded in his face, leaving a four-foot hole in the ground and heard by people as far as four miles away.

The blast blew off some of Radford’s fingers, burned his face and chest, and left his leg so damaged that doctors had to amputate it below the knee.…
