Elderly Woman Struck By Loose Fire Hose Dies

January 29, 2010 at 1:13 pm by

BOSTON – On Tuesday, fire engine No. 2 from the Lafayette Square station was responding to a water leak with its lights and sirens on when it made a turn onto Western Avenue. For reasons unknown and currently being investigated, the engine’s 200 foot long hose was completely off the truck and being dragged behind it. This trailing hose struck 82-year-old Gertrude King, who was standing in the median, behind the knees causing severe damage to her legs. She was rushed to the hospital but died on Thursday. Doctors stated that had she survived, her leg would have been amputated. King had been on her daily routine of walking to Cambridge’s Central Square to shop at the time of the accident. Friends say she was very independent and a very strong lady – even to the end. Her nephew said she still had her Whole Foods bags in her hands when brought to the hospital and was telling nurses which foods could be saved and which needed to be thrown out.…

Woman Dies In Freak Skiing Accident

January 18, 2010 at 12:43 pm by

TELLURIDE, Colo – Yeah, the title is very accurate. I can honestly say I have never heard of anyone dying this way. Fifty-year-old Mary Scott King was heli-skiing with a guide in the Mineral Creek Basin. For those of you who about to Google “heli-skiing,” it is simply backcountry downhill skiing in which a helicopter is used to get a skier to their starting point. Anyway, on their way down, King attempted to cross a creek and ended up falling in. The “freak” part of this accident is that her helmet became wedged in between two rocks, firmly holding her face under the water. Her guide was unable to free her and King drowned. This is also another way that I will add to my list of “Ways I Will Never Die.” “Drowning While Heli-Skiing” will go right along with “Bungee Cord Snapped,” “Parachute Didn’t Open,” and “Eaten by Great White Shark While Snorkeling off the Coast of South Africa”. I know, it may seem as if I am not out there “living,” but until you can add “Bleeding to Death After Having Genitals Eaten Off by Neglected, Vengeful Cat While Trapped By Collapsed Stack Of Entertainment Weeklys” to your list of probable deaths, you can shut the hell up.…

Arizona Fire PitPHOENIX, AZ – A 45-year-old man died while helping his cousin roast a pig for a neighborhood block party. He accidentally fell into the 3-foot deep backyard fire pit, face first, and became wedged.

When his cousin was unable to pull him out of the fire, he used a water hose in an attempt to douse the fire. So not only did this poor guy burn in a fire pit that was probably at several hundred degrees, he also got steamed.

It took several police officers to get the man out of the pit, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Reports are that the two men had been drinking, but it’s not known if that played any factor into the man falling in.

His cousin was so traumatized by what had happened, he was taken to the hospital for treatment.

MESA, Ariz – Nicole M. Brock, 16, had just dropped off her brother, 17-year-old Dwight J. Brock Jr., at the Superstition Springs Mall. While still in the parking lot, the siblings began goofing around with Dwight jumping in front of the car and Nicole slamming on the brakes. But the fun and games turned into horror as Nicole’s brother jumped in front of the car and she was unable to slam on the brakes in time and ran him over. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but later died.  As an old fart, I read stories like this and realize just how lucky me and my friends were with our vehicles. We performed some really, really stupid stunts with them. Hell, even my Mom would pull that stop-go-stop-go routine whenever I would try to get into the car. That is until the last time I got in after she did that and I knocked her unconscious. …

Death Wants Shannon Broome

December 3, 2009 at 10:03 am by

JACKSONVILLE, Florida This is a story that sounds like it came from one of the “Final Destination” films. Back in June, 15-year-old Shannon Broome was involved in an SUV roll-over that claimed the life of four of her friends while on a trip to the beach. On the last day of school, nine students climbed into an SUV driven by 15-year-old Brandon Hodges. While on I-295, the SUV blew a tire and rolled, ejecting all the occupants except for Hodges. Shannon was one of the lucky occupants who survived, suffering a broken leg (read all the news4jax reports on that accident). Now almost 6 months later to the day, Shannon is back in the hospital after suffering injuries from another crash involving an SUV, one that plowed through her bedroom as she lay sleeping. Police have charged 19-year-old Steven Nicholas Bryant with careless driving after he admitted he lost control of his vehicle while texting. Broome suffered non-life-threatening injuries including a broken pelvis and ribs as well as re-breaking the leg that was broke in the I-295 crash.…

Little Girl Killed By Toy Box

December 2, 2009 at 9:53 am by

CHANDLER, Arizona – A 3-year-old girl has died after the lid to her toy box fell closed, hitting her in the head. Officials say the girl was reaching inside the toy box for a toy when the lid closed hitting her head “‘on the wrong spot” and sending her into cardiac arrest. Paramedics arrived on the scene and tried to resuscitate the girl, but were not able to. “I’ve been a paramedic for almost 30 years and I’ve seen this event just three times with a toy box. I can’t stress enough that this is just a tragic, tragic accident,” said Chandler Fire Battalion Chief Paul Nies. You know, I am aware that the top of the skull on young kid’s are not fully…cooked…or whatever. But I’ve honestly never thought of this kind of thing happening. Imagine looking after your kid making sure they are not put in harm’s way unnecessarily, keeping them safe and sound. Only to have them die like this. …

Mother Smothers Baby While Breastfeeding On Plane

December 1, 2009 at 11:55 am by

33,000-feet over the Atlantic – On November 24th, a 29-year-old mother was on a United Airlines flight to Kuwait. She was on her way to visit relatives with her 4-week-old daughter. At some point during the flight, the mother began breastfeeding the baby, and then fell asleep. When she woke up, she found that she had smothered her infant. Passengers and crew were alerted to something wrong when the mother began screaming for help. A doctor on the plane tried to revive the baby but was unsuccessful. The baby was pronounced dead on arrival after the plane was landed at London’s Heathrow airport where the flight had been diverted. Police are still investigating but no arrests have been made and nothing points to the incident being nothing more than a tragic accident.…

Man Forced To Choose Between Saving His Wife Or Son

December 1, 2009 at 11:42 am by

Whanganui, New Zealand – After a group of kids vandalized their mailbox on Saturday, Vanessa Horton and her 13-year-old son, Silva, jumped into their Mazda station wagon to give chase. Stacey Horton jumped in another vehicle and followed after his wife and son. Not far from the home he finds that his wife’s car had rolled down an embankment and into the Whanganui River. Vanessa had escaped the vehicle and was screaming for help, barely able to keep her head above water. His son was still trapped in the vehicle which was already three feet below the water and sinking. He only had time to save one of them. …

Odessa, Texas A family of four were found dead in their trailer by police conducting a welfare check. 30-year-old Juan Jesus Martinez, 22-year-old Judy Quezeda Martinez, 4-year-old Juan Jesus Martinez, Jr. and 2-year-old Miguel Martinez had all died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The mother and two kids were found in the living room, Mr. Martinez was found in a bedroom next to a generator that had run out of gas but was still in the “on” position. Investigators have determined that the generator was being used to provide electricity to the trailer. At some point, Martinez woke up and tried to get to the generator to turn it off, but was overcome and died. No disrespect meant towards the Martinez’s, but come one. Running a gas generator IN the trailer?…

Girl Is Crushed To Death After Slipping Under Train

November 25, 2009 at 9:07 am by

UK – We’ve all seen it before in movies or television. The loved one running alongside a departing train blowing kisses or waving at someone inside staring back at them through a window. How nice. But in the case of 16-year-old Megan Moore, this innocent act turned horrific. She had gotten off the train, and as it was leaving, she began running beside it tapping on the window waving goodbye to her friends. She was wearing high-heels and slipped into the gap between the train and the platform. The train stopped immediately, but it was too late. Her friends have set up a memorial Facebook Page for her.…

Teen Dies After Being Pulled Into Wood Chipper

November 23, 2009 at 3:49 pm by

POQUOSON, Virginia – It’s been awhile, but we have another horrific story of someone being killed inside a wood chipper. Sometime after 3 p.m. Sunday, 14-year-old Frank Anthony Gornick was working for Old Dominion Tree and Lawn Care Service doing some storm cleanup. He was using a shovel to load limbs into a wood chipper when the shovel got caught in the blades and Gornick was pulled inside the wood chipper. Another co-worker ran over to turn off the machine, but it was too late. The report says he died instantly so I guess that is some type of consolation for his friends and family. This ranks up there in my list of most horrific way to die. Even if this kid was an absolute asshole, which by all accounts he was not, he would not have deserved a death like this. A Facebook Page has been set up in his memory and Poquoson high school and middle school are making grief counselors available to all students. …

FERRUM, Virginia – 23-year-old Jessica Goode was out in the woods collecting frogs for a science project with two other Ferrum College students when 100 yards away 31-year-old hunter, Jason Cloutier, took aim with his high-powered rifle and fired — mistaking Goode for a deer. The bullet struck Goode in the chest, passed through her and through the hand of 20-year-old Regis J. Boudinot. Goode turned to Boudinot and stated “I’m going to die” and then collapsed. Cloutier immediately tried to help Goode, but it was too late. Although this is a tragic accident, Cloutier was not supposed to be hunting on the property. He now faces charges of manslaughter, reckless handling of a firearm and trespassing. He is currently out on bail. A Remembering Jess Goode Facebook page has been created if you want to stop by. I would advise anyone not wearing a bright orange vest with blinking Christmas lights, and a loud speaker exclaiming “I am NOT a deer!” to stay out of the Virginia woods during hunting season. …
