BIRMINGHAM, AL – A couple were found dead inside their home after their 3-year-old granddaughter was found wandering the neighborhood in blood-stained clothes.

On August 2, a woman called police after a toddler wearing bloody clothes walked to her front door crying about her grandparents and would not say anything else.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the girl’s clothes had blood on them but she was not injured.

She led the officers to her grandparents’ home where they would find the dead bodies of Mary Holt, 67, and Joe “Steve” Holt, 68.

Police are not releasing much information regarding their deaths, aside from their deaths being investigated as homicides.

The neighbor who called police said Mary Holt often watched her granddaughter while the child’s mother was at work, but said she usually kept her at the child’s home.

She went on to say that she was told there was no forced entry into the home.

“This neighborhood is not only peaceful and quiet,” she said, “but we’ve got eyes and ears everywhere. The whole thing is strange and crazy.”

Homicide detectives were int he neighborhood hoping some of these “eyes and ears” will help them find the person(s) responsible as they interview neighbors and search for home surveillance cameras.

Anyone with information pertaining to this case should call the Birmingham police Homicide Unit at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
