TANPA BAY, FL – Police have charged 26-year-old Shakayla Denson with murder after she drowned her 4-year-old daughter into the Hillsborough River.

Police say Denson stole a car from an auto body shop Thursday afternoon and drove to the river with her daughter, Je’Hyrah Daniels.

Once there, Denson got out of the car and carried her daughter into the water.

“She started dragging Je’Hyrah by the arm and heads toward the Hillsborough River,” Police Chief Brian Dugan said. “Witnesses report that the child was screaming and at one time, both the child and the mother were screaming.”

Holding her daughter close to her chest, Denson waded into the water until it was near the top of her shoulders before letting Je’Hyrah go. She then turned around toward walked back to the river bank leaving her daughter to drown.

Police were already on their way to the scene after concerned citizens began calling about a crazy woman in the river with a kid, and Denson was taken into custody a short distance away.

Her daughter was found unconscious in the water about 75 feet from shore. She was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

Denson has been charged with murder, aggravated child abuse and grand theft of a motor vehicle. She’s currently being held in the Hillsborough County jail with no bond.

No reason has been given for Denson’s actions, although Denson created a GoFundMe for her daughter nine months ago explaining her daughter had been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum.

It wouldn’t be the first time we reported on a mother killing their autistic child for reasons that made sense only to them. But for now, it’s all just speculatin’.

“Unfortunately at this time, there are much more questions than there are answers,” Police Chief Brian Dugan told reporters. “It’s the craziness of the world we live in at this time.”
