AURORA, CO – A police officer fatally shot an armed homeowner who had just shot a naked intruder who came into his home and attacked his 11-year-old grandson.

There’s still a lot of unanswered questions regarding this incident, but here’s what we know so far:

Just before 1:30 a.m. Monday, 73-year-old Richard “Gary” Black was in his home with his wife, son and 11-year-old grandson when a naked man kicked in the door.

The man made a beeline for the 11-year-old who was sleeping on a couch and began strangling him. He then dragged the boy to a bathroom where he attempted to drown him in a bathtub.

The other family members were woken up by the struggle and Black tried getting the man off his grandson while his called 911. She explained to the dispatcher what was happening and gave clear descriptions of her husband and the intruder

While she was on the phone, Black had retrieved a 9mm handgun after getting hit in the head with a vase and used it to shoot the naked man twice, killing him.

Police were already on the scene at this time and heard the gunshots. When one of the officers encountered Black, who was still armed, they shot and killed him.

According to the family’s lawyer, evidence shows the officer shot Black from outside the home but he is waiting to see bodycam footage of the shooting.

Aurora Police Chief Nick Metz is not commenting much about the incident, citing an ongoing investigation, but did say the officer was on paid administrative leave.

In a written release, Metz said that “officers arrived to a very chaotic and violent scene” after a series of 911 calls.

“While on scene officers heard gunshots fired from inside the home, and encountered an armed adult male. An officer discharged his firearm striking the armed male who was transported to the hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries,” the release said.

Black’s grandson was taken to the hospital to treat serious, but not life-threatening injuries. The naked intruder was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity or motive has not been made public at this time. The only information about him came from the family’s lawyer, who said he may have been at a house party nearby.

What a shame though, right? I’m reserving judgment on the cop’s actions until more information comes out, but still… survive a war and then die at the hands of police while protecting your family. Sucks.
