RICHMOND, VA – A man from New Zealand traveled 8,500 miles to the home of a Virginia teen and was shot in the neck by the teen’s mother while trying to break into the home.

The 14-year-old girl met 25-year-old Troy Skinner on Discord three to four months ago but had been trying to cut off communication with him.

In response, Skinner took three planes from New Zealand to get to Washington on June 20. He then took a Greyhound bus to Richmond the next day.

That afternoon he was knocking on the girl’s front door after first making a stop at Walmart where he purchased a pocket knife, pepper spray, and duct tape.

“He was not invited here, he was not expected here, he had been told in the past that the daughter no longer wished to communicate with him,” Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew said.

The teen’s mother refused to open the door for Skinner, so Skinner used a concrete landscaping door to try and break down the rear basement door.

When that proved unsuccessful, Skinner went to the rear deck of the home and used the stone to break a glass door despite the woman warning him she was armed with a handgun.

The woman wasn’t bluffing. She was brandishing a .22 caliber handgun and pointing it at Skinner as he reached in to unlatch the door. She fired two shots at Skinner and hit him once in the neck.

Skinner tried fleeing but collapsed in the front yard of a neighbor’s home. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

Skinner will be charged with breaking and entering with a deadly weapon, with intent to commit a serious felony, Agnew said.

“All I can say is the manner in which he attempted to enter that home,” he said, “in the face of a firearm pointed at him and the implements we recovered from him — the only inference is that he had very bad intent.”
