WICHITA, KS – The body of a 5-year-old boy missing since February has been located and his stepmother has been taken into custody.

Lucas Hernandez was reported missing in February of this year. His stepmother, 26-year-old Emily Glass, told police she had fell asleep for a few hours and when she woke up Hernandez was gone.

Investigators immediately began searching the area but could not find any trace of him. An Amber Alert because there were no indications the boy had been abducted.

The search for Hernandez ended on Thursday when his remains were found underneath a Kansas bridge. Police say his remains were not visible from the street and had been there for ‘awhile’.

Investigators say Glass led a private investigator to the area. She was still at the scene when police arrived and began the search that led them to the boy’s remains.

Glass was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail late that night for interference with law enforcement officer and obstruction. My guess is that those charges will be upgraded once a cause of death has been determined.

Before he went missing, the state of Kansas was told at least twice that Hernandez was being abused and enduring a dysfunctional and violent family life.

It was alleged that Glass had bipolar disorder, abused meth, and routinely targeted the boy when she was angry at his father, who traveled for work.

In May 2017, the Kansas Department for Children and Families received a report that Hernandez had bruising in the shape of a hand on his left arm, and bruises on his cheek and bottom. Although The boy said Glass was responsible, the state agency determined there was not enough evidence to support the allegation and closed the case.

In November 2017, while Glass and Lucas were visiting the boy’s father in New Mexico, that state’s child protection services agency received a report that Hernandez had two black eyes. The Kansas DCF contacted the New Mexico agency, which provided its report, saying it had determined the allegations were unfounded.

Then in December 2017, someone reported that Hernandez had bruises on his arms and a large bruise on his forehead. Hernandez said that Glass “became angry and threw a water bottle at his face.”

DCF would not receive that report until two days after the boy disappeared. The next day a social worker interviewed the school nurse at Beech Elementary School where Hernandez attended. She said the boy arrived at school one day in January with multiple cuts and bruises.

Glass claimed he fell off monkey bars, but the nurse said, “It looked like he had been in a fight.” More ominously, the boy reported feeling ill at the school at least twice in the days before he went missing, including the last day he attended school.
