CONVERSE, TX – A 4-year-old boy was mauled to death by the family dog while playing in the backyard of his home.

According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Noah Trevino was playing alone in the backyard of his home Sunday afternoon when the dog attacked.

The dog, described as a “mixed large breed” was tied up at the time and it is believed the boy got too close to the animal while playing.

“It appears that the child may have gotten too close to the dog,” Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said. “One of the relatives of the child actually looked out into the backyard and saw that the dog had his mouth around the little boy’s neck and was shaking him.”

Family members were able to get the dog off of Noah and began administering CPR. Unfortunately, Noah was declared dead after being airlifted to the hospital. He had just celebrated his fourth birthday two weeks prior.

Bexar County Animal Control took the dog for an overnight observation and to be tested for rabies. The dog will then be euthanized.

“This was a family dog,” Salazar said. “Even if the dog doesn’t show any outward signs of aggression, sometimes they can be unpredictable. So, it’s best to always be vigilant when you’re dealing with a small child and a dog like that.”

Year after year we report on similar stories in which unsupervised kids are mauled to death by the family dog. It’s as never-ending as reporting on kids dying after being left in hot cars.

As the owner of one of the sweetest, dopiest dogs on the planet, I would never leave him alone with a small kid. No matter how much you want to humanize a dog, they are animals. For me, it’s always been best to err on the side of caution.
