KIRKWOOD, CA – A woman and her 7-year-old son died at Kirkwood Mountain Resort after they were buried underneath snow that had fallen from the resort’s roof.

Olga Perkovic, 50, and her 7-year-old son Aaron Goodstein had finished their last run of the day at the resort and were headed back to their condo.

They were just feet from the front door when a chunk of snow the size of a trailer slid off the roof and landed right on top of the pair, burying them under three feet of snow.

A couple of hours later, at around 6:40 p.m., a family member reported Perkovic missing when she and her son never returned from the slopes.

Rescuers spent hours searching at the ski resort near the ski lift where they had last scanned their tickets, unaware the pair had taken an alternate route back to their condo.

Perkovic and her son would not be found until 9 p.m. after a neighbor called 911 to report spotting ski gloves next to the condo and realizing the pair were buried under the snow.

Unfortunately, it was too late. They were both declared dead after being airlifted to the hospital.

“It was a freak accident,” Undersheriff Spencer Pace said. He said in the 30 years he and the sheriff have been there, they cannot recall anyone ever dying from snow falling from a roof.
