HYATTSVILLE, MD — A man has been charged with attempted murder after getting into an argument with his roommate then throwing sulfuric acid in her face.

The incident happened Saturday night during an argument between 28-year-old Bekre Abdela and his roommate at the boarding house where they both lived.

At some point, Abdela ended the dispute by dousing the woman with acid.

According to witnesses, the victim ran from the house screaming for help. A neighbor said the woman was partially naked as the acid had already begun destroying her clothes.

When police and paramedics arrived, they found the woman suffering from second- and third-degree chemical burns to her face and body. She was rushed to the hospital where she is currently in critical condition.

Abdela had already fled the scene before police arrived, but was apprehended two days later and taken into custody. He has been charged with attempted murder, assault, and other charges. He is being held without bond.

“This is an egregious crime and somebody who does something like this, we don’t want on our streets at all,” Cpl. Lamar Robinson said.

There’s been no motive behind the attack or what the argument was about, but Abdela could just be nuts. According to one of his neighbors, he was an odd fella.

“You could find him walking around the yard talking to himself, walking back and forth up and down the street, talking to himself like he was on a cellphone, but he wasn’t,” she said.
