BUCKEYE, AZ – A woman in Arizona has been arrested after she fatally shot her 2-year-old son to death before stabbing herself repeatedly in the neck.

Police were called to a home after a family member called them to report 26-year-old Alyssa Pettibone had shot her son and was now trying to kill herself.

When officers arrived, they found Alyssa and her son, Hudson Pettibone, lying on the floor of a bathroom.

Hudson was dead from a single gunshot wound, while Alyssa was suffering from multiple, self-inflicted stab wounds to her neck. She told police that she was the one who shot her son before trying to shoot herself.

She failed to blow her brains out with the 9mm handgun found in the bathroom because a bullet had been loaded in the magazine backwards, causing the gun to jam after she shot her son.

Police noted Alyssa seemed mentally disturbed displayed signs of “control/ownership/jealousy issues.” They said that during their interview with Alyssa, she said she was sorry and that “No one would understand.”

Alyssa Pettibone was booked into jail on second-degree murder charges after being released from the hospital. Her bond was set at $750,000 and her next court appearance scheduled for Dec. 22.
