ALMERIA, SPAIN – Three people, including two children, were burned to death inside a cave after a teen set a fire at the opening of the cave and turned it into a chimney.

I normally don’t post horrible stories from around the globe, but this one out of Spain was too horrific and unique to not report on.

Here’s what I can gather from DailyMail’s incorrect details, as well as Google translating local reports of the incident.

In the mountains of the northern part of Almeria, there is a limestone cave that young people use as a hideout where young people often go to drink, smoke and listen to music. At around 8 p.m. Monday night, 21-year-old Alejandro P., a 17-year-old boy and two girls aged 14 and 12-years-old were inside the cave.

Another group of teens arrived and wanted to go inside the cave as well, but were denied entry. A 17-year-old with a history of setting fires was not happy about the rejection and set fire to a couch at the mouth of the cave to flush the others out.

The 17-year-old that was inside the cave ran out, but the other three were stuck inside as the fire spread from the couch to old furniture and mattresses inside of the cave. The teen responsible for the fire tried putting it out, but ran off when he was unable to do so.

Alejandro and the two girls ended up trapped inside and burned alive as the limestone cave was turned into an oven or, more accurately, a kiln.

A man walking his dog saw the fire and called the fire department, who did not initially realize anyone was inside the cave. The victims’ charred bodies were discovered huddled together inside the cave after the fire had been extinguished. According to officials, the temperatures had gotten so high that the bodies had been completely calcined.

Five minors were initially tracked down and apprehended by police, but currently the 17-year-old who set the fire is the only one still in custody.
