Phoenix, AZ — Kansas Lavarnia, 31, and his wife, 28-year-old Wendy Lavarnia, are facing charges after their 9-year-old son was shot in the head by his 2-year-old brother.

The child is currently on life support and is not expected to survive.

Wendy Lavarnia, who was home with three other children at the time, reportedly told police that she had put the loaded gun on the bed, well within reach of two of the children involved, and then turned around to grab the holster.

She said she heard a shot and turned around and saw her 2-year-old holding the gun and her 9-year-old, who had been standing nearby, shot in the head.

Kansas returned to the home shortly after first responders arrived. He was promptly detained and questioned about the gun used in the shooting.

Kansas, a convicted felon, was arrested on suspicion of prohibited possession of a firearm. Wendy has been charged with four counts of child endangerment.

It is unclear whether the three other children are in protective custody, or with relatives.
