leonardo-sanchezWEST JORDAN, UT – Here’s some nightmare fuel for any of you with children in daycare. A 1-year-old boy suffocated under a bean bag chair as a daycare worker sat on it and read a story to other children.

On Sept 8, Leonardo Sanchez was at the West Jordan Child Center when he crawled under a bean bag chair to hide. A female daycare worker, unaware Leonardo was under the chair, sat in it and began reading a story to the other children.

Surveillance camera footage shows it was 15 minutes before it was realized Leonardo was missing and was located under the bean bag chair. Attempts were made to resuscitate the boy at the daycare, but he would be pronounced dead after being transported to the hospital.

His parents are understandably upset and want to know how something like this could have happened to their son, who would have celebrated his second birthday this Saturday. A day that will now be the boy’s funeral.

“I’m just confused on how you don’t know where my kid is. How do you not feel him? How do you not hear him scream?” said the boy’s mother, Danielle Sanchez. “Somebody dropped the ball, and now we’re going to have to bury a boy because of that.”

Sgt. Joe Monson, with the West Jordan police, called the incident a tragic accident and no charges have been filed against the unidentified employee who sat in the chair.

As for West Jordan Child Center, they have had two violations in the last five years, including one instance in which children were left unsupervised. Tom Hudachko, with the Utah health department, is still collecting information for their report.

The day care released the following statement:

“We regret deeply the tragic death of a young toddler at our day care facility. No words adequately describe the depth of the sorrow we feel. And, of course, we do not pretend to understand how devastating this is for the family.”
