KalamazooKALAMAZOO, MI – Police have a 50-year-old man in custody after he allegedly plowed his pickup truck into a group of bicyclists, killing five and sending four others to the hospital.

It all started Tuesday evening when police started receiving phone calls from concerns citizens regarding a blue pickup truck driving erratically.

Officers were dispatched but did not locate the truck until 30 minutes later after he had crashed into a bicycling group from behind. Five of the people hit were pronounced dead at the scene, while four others were rushed to the hospital.

With his truck disabled from hitting the bicyclists, the driver tried to flee the scene on foot but was apprehended nearby and is currently in the Kalamazoo County Jail. Officials are not releasing his name until formal charges have been filed against him.

“There are multiple possibilities in terms of charges but a determination of what is an appropriate charge can only be made after we’ve had the opportunity to review all the evidence police are able to gather,” Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said.

No word on if the man was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but Getting said this is something they are looking into. All the names of those that were killed or injured have not been released at this time, aside from Debbie Bradley and her friend, Suzanne Sippel.

Spokesmen for the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center at University of North Carolina said they do not recall a crash that has killed this many bicyclists.

If the name of the city sounds familiar to you, it may be because this is the same city Uber driver Jason Dalton went on a shooting spree that killed six people less than four months ago.
