Roselynn 'Rosie' Mae HannaGAHANNA, OH – A 3-year-old girl has died after she was accidentally strangled by a window blind cord.

Last week, Whitney Hanna called 911 to report she had found her daughter, Roselynn ‘Rosie’ Mae Hanna, unconscious and not breathing.

Hanna said she had left her daughter unattended for five minutes while she tended to her 2-year-old son in another room. When she returned, she found Rosie lying on the living room floor with a window blind cord wrapped around her neck.

She performed CPR on her daughter until paramedics arrived minutes later. Rosie was rushed to the hospital where she would be pronounced dead four days later – which also happens to be her 6-year-old sister’s birthday.

Kids dying after getting tangled up in window blind cords is a lot more common than I thought. We’ve reported on one or two incidents over the years, but according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, nearly 600 children have been strangled by window blind cords over the past 30 years. That’s almost one child for every month.

The Window Covering Manufacturers Association felt this statistic warranted a new safety standard that was set in 2012, and now followed by the entire industry. It calls for a myriad of different safety devices be included with continuous loop and pull cord blinds.

Despite this, Target and Ikea will no longer sell corded blinds while others, like Home Depot and Walmart, vow to phase them out of their stores over the next few years.

Consumer Product Safety Commission Chairman Elliot Kaye would like to see them banned everywhere. “We want to end the uncertainly and we want to end the deaths and the only way to do that is to have safe products on store shelves,” said Kaye.

If you want to help out Rosie’s family with funeral costs, you can do so via a GoFundMe page created by the girl’s uncle.

One our fans sent me a link to an older stroy regarding a boy who almost died from a window blind cord while his mother was in the same room filming him and his siblings. The video is below, and is disturbing, but the boy survived.
