7-11BURIEN, WA – A 7-11 customer with a concealed weapons permit shot and killed a hatchet-wielding man attacking a store clerk Sunday morning.

Early Sunday morning, an unidentified man walked into a 7-11 wearing a mask and wielding a hatchet. He reportedly said nothing to the clerk behind the counter or the customers in the store when he began swinging his weapon.

“What everybody says is that he didn’t say anything. He just walked in the store, had the hatchet, and started attacking people,” King County PIO Cindi West said.

The man first swung the hatchet at a customer before going behind the counter and attacking a 58-year-old convenience store employee. What the attacker probably did not expect was that one of the customers in the store is a regular, and he has a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

The 60-year-old man, who comes to the store every morning to get coffee and talk with the employees, pulled out a handgun and shot the man as he was attacking the employee. Emergency workers were unable to save the man’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Aside from the dead man and the clerk who suffered some minor slashes to his stomach, no one else at the store was injured. The clerk called the customer a “very nice guy” who, he says, saved his life.

As for the Good Samaritan, he was too shaken to speak to reporters. No charges are expected to be filed in the shooting, but the case will be forwarded to the King County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

“Had this [customer] not shot, who knows what would’ve happened. We might have a dead clerk right now and instead we have a dead bad guy,” said West. “We do not see any wrongdoing on the part of the customer. ”
