Chelsea AkeHENDERSON, NV – Police say 24-year-old Chelsea Ake, a manager at Rejuvenice Cryotherapy, froze to death after entering one of the cryotherapy chambers after hours.

The gruesome discovery was made after Rejuvenice employees came to work the other morning and found Ake dead inside one of the company’s cryotherapy chambers.

According to the Rejuvenice website, these  “cryosaunas” or “cryochambers” are an alternative to cold water immersion or ice packs that decreases cell growth and increases cellular survival by subjecting the occupant with dry air that dips below -240 degrees Fahrenheit.

This treatment is only supposed to last two to four minutes, but Ake was in the chamber for at least 10 hours. Surveillance cameras show that after Ake closed up shop, she walked to the back where the cryochambers are located. There are no cameras in that area, so investigators can only assume Ake got into one of them by herself and that the machine did not turn off.

Investigators say it’s likely Ake suffocated within seconds, and say her death was due to “operator error.” Her family disputes this claim, stating Ake was an aesthetician and chamber operator who “knew exactly what she was doing.” They say investigators at the coroner’s office told them they were looking into the gases Ake inhaled before her death, as well as the chamber’s mechanics and whether she could keep her head above the chamber to breathe.

Rejuvenice advertises two machines; one that is a single-user, body only chamber that does not require the user wear a mask, and another that is a full body chamber that does requires users to wear a mask. It has not been reported which one Ake was using, but going by the coroner statement regarding Ake keeping her head up to breathe I’m assuming she was in the body only chamber.

So now let’s add suffocating inside a cryochamber to the list of horrible ways to die at work, including being cooked inside an industrial tuna steamer, drowning in pinto beans and chocolate, being chewed up inside meat grinders and wood chippers,  getting stuck inside industrial dryers,  flattened by paper rolling machines, and dying from an exploding beer keg.
