Matthew LuedermanBEATRICE, NE – A man at a Nebraska gas station failed to kill himself even after using a myriad of different items, including gasoline, scissors and an ice scraper.

Early Tuesday morning, 27-year-old Matthew Luedeman arrived at a Cenex gas station wearing nothing but a pair of jeans and doused himself with gasoline.

“He took the gas nozzle, turned the gas pump on, held the nozzle above his head and poured gasoline on himself,” Police Chief Bruce Lang said. “He then set himself on fire.”

Luedeman was reportedly engulfed in flames for 10 seconds before he tried pouring more gasoline on himself, but by that time the clerk inside the gas station had already tuned off the gas pumps.

Undeterred, Luedeman walked into the gas station and chased the clerk outside. While the clerk called police, Luedeman walked back inside the store and grabbed a pair of scissors of the rack that he used to cut himself “vertically down the middle about 18 inches.”

Not satisfied, Luedeman went searching for another device, settling on an ice scraper. “He went to where they’re selling ice scrapers,” said Lang. “He took an ice scraper and attempted to cut his carotid artery in his neck on the right side.”

By this time, an officer had arrived on the scene and had to use a Taser to subdue him. “He didn’t show the typical pain signs that somebody that’s been tased shows. It hurts. He had the involuntary muscle response, but not a pain response,” Lang said.

Luedeman was flown to the hospital where is was in critical condition Tuesday night.

At around the same time the gas station clerk was calling Beatrice police, Luedeman’s parents in Idaho were also calling them after they pinged his cell phone to their location following several irrational phone calls he’d made.

Lang also said they had contact with Luedeman the night before after getting calls about his behavior. He said Luedeman was acting irrational, but not to the point that he could’ve been involuntarily committed.

“He was acting kind of strange, but as we all know, there are people acting strange that don’t necessarily rise to the level of us needing to do anything with them,” the chief said.
