Joshua DavisCHEVY CHASE, MD – The body of Joshua Davis, a 15-year-old boy reported missing when he did not return home Monday night, was found by his father on Tuesday. Looks like the kid was riding his bike in a wooded trail when a dead tree fell on top of him.

When Davis had not returned home by 10 p.m. Monday night, his father contacted police. A search for the teen proved unsuccessful until the following day when Davis’ father found his son in some woods near his home. The boy had apparently been riding his bike when an old, dead tree fell on him and killed him. Police say that there were several storms active Monday that may have been a factor in Davis’ death. No foul play is suspected.

The Director of Montgomery County Department of Parks said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by last night’s tragic accident in Rock Creek Park Stream Valley #2 claiming the life of a young boy riding his bicycle in the park. Our thoughts and sympathy go out to his family and friends. Our park police officers are continuing to work closely with the county police to investigate this very sad incident.”

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Principal Karen Lockard also released a statement to parents that stated, “I ask those of you who knew Josh to remember and celebrate his life. Josh was a proud Boy Scout, had a contagious smile and loved to be with his friends. Our entire community shares in the grief of this sudden and tragic loss.”

She also stated that counselors would be available to students throughout the week. A Facebook page has been setup where friends have been expressing their condolences.

Having a teenage son myself, I cannot imagine what his father is going through. Not only losing his son, but losing him in this manner. You can only hope the boy was killed instantly, and did suffer a prolonged death alone in the woods. It’s a shame and a sobering realization that no matter what you do, you cannot always protect your kids from harm.
