PLYMOUTH, MA — If you are interested in watching someone suffer severe backlash at the hands of the Internet because of a picture they posted on Facebook, then look no further than 30-year-old Lindsey Stone.

Stone was visiting the Arlington National Cemetery in October while on a paid business trip. She and a co-worker thought it would be funny to take this picture of Lindsey acting as if she was shouting while giving the finger to a sign at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier that asks for “silence and respect.”

Thinking that this was funny and clever and everyone would tell them what a laugh riot she is, Lindsey and her co-worker posted the image to their public Facebook profiles for the world to see. Of course, this turned out to be a real bad idea.

It wasn’t long before the picture went viral, outraging many, prompting someone claiming to be a disabled Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran to create a Fire Lindsey Stone Facebook page. He is demanding that Stone be fired from LIFE, the non-profit organization that helps adults with disabilities that Lindsey worked for and who paid for the trip.

When her employer was notified of the picture, and the shitstorm it had created, they released the following statement:

On Nov. 19 at approximately 6 p.m., we became aware that one of our employees had posted an offensive, inappropriate photograph on her personal Facebook page. The photo was taken at a national historic site in October by a fellow employee during a trip to Washington, D.C. attended by 40 residents and eight staff. The photo has since been removed from Facebook, and both employees have been placed on unpaid leave pending the results of an internal investigation.

At first, Lindsey was unapologetic about her photo, explaining on her Facebook page that she was not trying to disrespect the dead, just the sign:

“Whoa whoa whoa… wait. This is just us, being the douchebags that we are, challenging authority in general. Much like the pic posted the night before, of me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY we meant NO disrespect to the people that serve or have served our country.”

It got so bad that an official apology was finally issued in which Lindsey and her coworker apologize to LIFE and to anyone they offended. It ends with:

Again, we very sincerely apologize to everyone who took offense to the photo. We realize that it was an ignorant and distateful thing for us to do, but we truly meant no harm. We are deeply sorry

But of course, the crowd smells blood and the hate is still flowing like wine. People are not satisfied with her being on unpaid leave and apologizing for her actions. They are posting her personal info online, calling for her to serve community service, and even want her to be deported.

Personally, I find the picture not funny, inappropriate and disrespectful. I’m from a military family and have lost a couple friends serving in our military overseas. But come on, it’s just an idiot making fun of a sign. You can tell by her explanations that she truly didn’t mean any disrespect to the dead, she’s just really stupid.

By some of the responses this picture has garnered, you’d think she pissed on the sign before draping it with an American flag she just wiped her ass with. If you are looking for a productive way to help or honor a veteran, there are better ways than piling on a 30-year-old idiot in Massachusetts. You could always volunteer your time or donate items. Or, I don’t know, find a veteran and thank them.
