NEW BEDFORD, Mass., –– A mother and her boyfriend have both been arrested after a 4-year-old boy was beaten so badly, a hospital nurse was reportedly brought to tears after seeing his injuries.

Police say the boy had bruising and cuts all over his body and dried blood in his ear resulting from his mother’s boyfriend, 31-year-old Elvis Garcia, beating the boy with a belt “and other means” over a period of several days.

Garcia was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon resulting in substantial bodily injury and reckless endangerment of a child. The boy’s mother is facing charges of permitting substantial injury to a child, reckless endangerment to a child under 18 and being an accessory after the fact because she was aware of the ass-kicking Garcia was doling out on her son.

The boy’s grandfather told reporters that he feared for the boy’s safety and tried to get the state to remove the boy from his mother, but social workers did nothing.

“We loved this kid and were trying to protect him before something happened. This all could have been prevented. When I say he was bruised from his head to his toes, it’s not a figure of speech. He’s petrified,” he said.

Even more tragic is the fact that last week a judge finally ordered custody of the boy, the youngest of the 33-year-old woman’s three children, to be transferred to his maternal grandmother. Unfortunately, the woman could not locate her daughter or grandson.

You know the injuries were bad if a nurse was brought to tears over them. My mom was a nurse and she didn’t flinch at the sight of anything injury related. I could have ran up to her with my perforated intestine spraying my dinner out of of a gaping, hissing wound in my belly and she would calmly instruct me to go get her the Neosporin out of the medicine cabinet.
