Rowan Ford’s Stepfather Pleads Guilty To Reduced Charges, May Only Serve Six Years In Prison

WAYNESVILLE, MO - It’s been almost five years since I first reported on 9-year-old Rowan Ford. At the time, she was just a missing girl from Missouri whose stepfather was not being cooperative with police. I didn’t know it at the time, but it would take five years for the case to be resolved, and the details of what happened to that little girl would end up haunting me to this day.
Three days after I posted that article in 2007, Rowan’s battered body was located in a sinkhole where she had been dumped after having been raped and strangled to death. The day after, police would arrest Rowan’s stepfather David Spears (who had previously been on the news pleading for her safe return) and his friend Chris Collings. Police would charge them both with Rowan’s rape and murder after Collings admitted to acting alone in abducting, raping, and strangling Rowan, while Spears confessed to participating in the rape of Rowan and being the one who strangled her to death.

Rolla, MO - Well, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition. A Phelps County jury has recommended the death penalty for Christopher Collings, who killed nine-year-old Rowan Ford in 2007. Yesterday at 6:17 p.m., the jury returned the verdict after forty-eight minutes of deliberation. Can I get an amen up in here?
Rowan Damia Ford was a sweet nine-year-old who made As and Bs in school even though sometimes her teachers had to make sure she ate. She helped with the Angel Food ministry at her church, and often arrived there hours early on Sunday, even though nobody else in her house went. She was happy on her bike, riding around town. She liked Disney princesses, spaghetti and the color purple. Rowan was 3’11″ tall and weighed 62 pounds, with long, wavy brown hair, big brown eyes, and freckles across her nose. Rowan did not need to die.
It won’t help us to go over the details of the brutal rape and the strangulation that ended Rowan’s life. It’s enough to know that she would likely have bled to death, but instead she got a cord around her neck and a horrific end in a dirty trailer. Rowan was found dumped into a hole that led to a cave, half naked, because Collings and Rowan’s own stepfather, David Spears, are the worst kind of pedophile baby-killers imaginable.…

Rolla, MO – Remember Rowan Ford? If you don’t, maybe you haven’t been here in awhile. Or maybe it’s been so long since the nine-year-old’s murder in 2007 that you forgot. I’d forgive you if you blocked it out from trauma – Rowan’s murder was heinous.
Long story short, Chris Collings (who is 6’6″) and Rowan’s stepdad David Spears (who’s six feet wide, give or take) thought it would be really fun to pull a train on a nine year old girl. Then one or both of the men garroted Rowan with a cord and dumped her body down a cave entrance, where she laid half-clothed and decomposing for nearly a week. Nice, huh? NO.
Collings has admitted to abducting Rowan from her bed and taking her to a trailer, where he raped and killed the child. Spears has also admitted to raping and killing Rowan, which is a slick strategy if you like defense maneuvers for later appeals.
This week, a Phelps County jury finally convicted Christopher Collings of first-degree murder for killing Rowan during the commission of statutory rape.…

As for the actual podcast, Imp and myself (Jaded was out getting drunk and eating too much BBQ shrimp) discussed media bias (again) in regards to missing persons cases that was once again made apparant with the news of Phylicia Barnes’ body being found. We also discuss the latest depressing news on Rowan Ford as well as the beatdown of a transgender woman at the hands of two teen girls in a Baltimore McDonald’s.
We even get some surprise mail from Jaded’s biggest fan, Jane Importante. If you listened in on the podcast last night, you heard the message. But if you check out some of the stuff me and Imp talked about after we went off the air, you can also hear Jane’s response that can only be summed up with o_O.

Phelps County, Missouri - The rape and murder trial of Chris Collings, 35, was set to start on Monday. Instead, Phelps County Judge Mary Sheffield declared a mistrial this morning because Collings’ prosecution and defense were unable to come up with a jury, even on a change of venue from Barry County and a two-year delay. We first reported on Rowan Ford over three years ago. Rowan Ford was nine years old in November 2007. She was an elfin little girl, sweet-natured despite her repeated bouts of head lice and general air of neglect. Rowan often slept in the back of her mother’s car while Colleen Spears worked the overnight shift at Wal-Mart. Rowan slept there when the weather was good because she was afraid of her stepfather, David Spears. The extent of Rowan’s fear was sadly proven correct when her battered, raped body was found bloody and strangled in a small cave a week after her disappearance.…

Stella, MO – We got an email the other day asking why there were a lack of updates from us regarding Rowan Ford, the 9-year-old girl who was raped and murdered by Christopher Collings and her step-father, David Spears. The reason for that is because there really isn’t anything to report aside from more of the same, meaning there has been yet another delay. Collings was supposed to see his day in court on January 13, but continued challenges to possible prosecution evidence and other trial procedures caused a judge postpone the trial until April 7. His defense attorneys are arguing that Collings’ confession is not admissible in court. It’s going to be an interesting trial as Collings and Spears both admit to killing Ford. Collings said he abducted Ford from her home, a trailer owned by Spears where she lived with him and her mother, and brought her to his trailer in Wheaton where he raped her and then strangled her before dumping her in a sinkhole. Spears said he arrived at Collings’ home to find Collings’ raping his stepdaughter and decided to participate rather than stop the assault and that he was the one who strangled Ford before dumping her body in the sinkhole.…

McDonald County, MO – Last November, McDonald County Sheriff’s Deputy Jacob Boles was helping with the search for Rowan Ford when he remembered about a sinkhole where he used to play. The FBI had mentioned wanting a look at the sinkhole, but hadn’t gotten out there yet. So Boles, 27, and another deputy stopped by on the way to work the next morning. Using a rope, and flashlight, and a buddy to hold the rope, Boles lowered himself into the sinkhole and saw the mostly nude, bloodied body of Rowan Ford. She was found.
And Deputy Jake Boles was lost. …

Stella, MO – David Spears, and his friend, Chris Collings, 32, were charged Saturday with one count each of first-degree murder, forcible rape and statutory rape in the death of a 9-year-old Rowan Ford. Her body was found Friday in a cave in a remote part of McDonald County, about 10 miles south of the village of Stella, where she lived with her mother and David Spears. Based in part on Collings’ statement, the affidavit sent to the prosecutor alleges that the men took Rowan from her home to a camping trailer where Collings lived in Barry County.…

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. — I wanted to get this story posted now, before the stepfather is eventually charged, or I am totally surprised that someone else is.
Rowan Ford, 9, was last seen by her mother, Colleen Spears, as she was getting ready for bed around 8:30 p.m. Friday. Colleen then left for her job at a Wal-Mart store. Rowan’s stepfather, David Spears, left the home with two male friends around 10:45 p.m. David Spears told investigators that he looked in on the girl in her bedroom before leaving, and she was sleeping.
David returns home at around midnight, but does not check on the girl. He calls his mother at around 1 a.m. so that he could borrow her car. She brings him the car and waits in the house watching TV until her son to got back around 7 a.m.
Spears gets home around 9 a.m. and is not greeted by her daughter like she normally is and wakes up David and asks him about Rowan. He states that he doesn’t know where she is and has not seen her, but that she had possibly woke him up in the middle of the night stating she was going to see a friend.…
