William HappStarke, FL – William Happ was put to death yesterday for the 1986 rape and murder of Angie Crowley, and was the first Florida inmate executed with their new lethal injection mixture.

William Happ has been on Death Row for 27 years, convicted of the rape and murder of 21-year-old Angie Crowley in 1986. Crowley had recently moved to Florida from Illinois, and was making a 300-mile drive to visit a college friend in Yankeetown.

Crowley was prone to getting lost, so she had meticulously planned her route, and was to meet her friend at a convenience store in Crystal River so she could guide her the last few miles to her home. Crowley made it to the store, but before she could use the pay phone to call her friend, Happ smashed her car window.

Happ kidnapped Crowley and took her to a nearby canal where he gave her 10 to 20 severe blows to the head before raping her. Afterwards, he strangled Crowley to death with her yoga pants and then dumped her body in the canal.…

Elmer CarrollSTARKE, FL – Yesterday at around 6:12 p.m., Florida executed 56-year-old Elmer Carroll for the 1990 rape and murder of 10-year-old Christine McGowen.

In 1990, Carroll was living in a halfway house after serving time in prison for lewd conduct with two children. Living next door was Christine, her mother and her stepfather. On Oct. 30, 1990 after Christine’s mother left for work, Carroll raped and strangled the poor girl in her own bed while her stepfather slept.

Carroll’s last meal consisted of sunny-side-up eggs with bacon and sliced tomatoes, biscuits, avocados, a fruit salad of strawberries, papaya, peaches and pineapple and canned milk. He declined to make a final statement, but Christine’s mother, Julie McGowen, issued one: “Thank you to all that have worked so hard, and justice for all, namely, Christine McGowen. Rest in peace.”

The Catholic Diocese of Orlando held a service just before Carroll’s execution, praying for the abolition of the death penalty. “It’s a destructive tool rather than a preventive tool,” Bishop John Noonan said to the 30 people who attended.…

Man Claims He’s Too Fat For Execution

September 18, 2012 at 8:47 am by

Columbus, OH – Ronald Post, 53, who is scheduled for a January 16th execution in the 1983 shooting death of motel clerk Helen Vantz, claims he is too fat to avoid a slow, torturous death.  He was convicted of shooting Vantz in the back of the head and making off with $100 and a television.

Post weighs in at a formidable 480 pounds.  He says that a combination of his weight, vein access, and scar tissue will make it difficult for executioners to exact society’s revenge.  When Post adopted such concern for others is unclear, but he’s asking for a stay of his execution for their sakes, I guess.

“Indeed, given his unique physical and medical condition there is a substantial risk that any attempt to execute him will result in serious physical and psychological pain to him, as well as an execution involving a torturous and lingering death,” a court filing said.  It would be nice if Post’s condition were truly unique, but a single trip to Walt Disney World will reveal to even the dimmest bulbs that it is not. …

Huntsville, TX — If all goes as planned, one of the men responsible for the dragging death of James Byrd 13 years ago will be dead sometime this evening.

Lawrence Russell Brewer, 44, is scheduled to die by lethal injection after 6 p.m. local time in Huntsville, Texas, making him the 11th man executed in Texas this year.

Back in 1998, 49-year-old James Byrd accepted a ride from Lawrence Brewer, John King, and Shawn Berry. The three men took Byrd to a remote area and beat him unconscious before they chained him by his ankles to the back of their pickup truck.

Byrd’s body  was dragged for three miles down asphalt pavement as the men swerved the truck side-to-side. Byrd was alive for about two miles until his body hit a culvert and he was decapitated. The men continued driving for another mile, dropping off Byrd’s remains in front of an African-American cemetery before attending a barbecue.

All three men were eventually tried and convicted. Brewer and King received the death penalty while Berry got life in prison.…
