Okay, okay, you have heard it so many times the other way around. “Videogames cause crime”, they all say. But I ask you, have they ever trotted Ross Perot out with some graphs and a pointer? No? Wanna know why? Because the statistics show the OPPOSITE to be true, and it is easier to talk out of your ass than it is to provide evidence. So here are my graphs…
First, let’s look at the amazing drop in crime rates that has taken place since 1993:

Oh, shit. How do we explain the sudden drop in all things horrible? Especially when teen pregnancy and drug rates also show a similar decline? What could these people be doing if they aren’t out aggravating and assaulting people (especially with aggravated assault!). Hmm… Could it be that they are…

…Playing videogames?!?!

From the Good News of the Week desk:
Man’s arm is successfully re-attached after it was removed by a crocodile without the man’s permission. The victim, Chang, is a Taiwanese Veterinarian who was attempting to remove a tranquilizer dart from the Croc when the Croc took exception. So, it removed Chang’s hand from his elbow.
Zoo workers fired on the Croc repeatedly, recovered Chang’s hand. Both are back together and are recovering quite nicely. The Crocodile is also in fine spirits. Despite being shot at numerous times, no bullet wounds could be found on the animal after a thorough inspection.
All around, this really qualifies for the GNotW department. Nobody was hurt, and the Crocodile got his five minutes of fame. If you follow the “more” link, there is a short video about this fascinating story. And more can be read about it here.…

Good News of the Week dept: Two independent groups have found success with two very different methods of curing diabetes. That’s right, CURING it.
From poster MadAnthonyWayne at Sciforums.com: ” a team of American and Brazilian Scientists have actually cured diabetes in 13 of 15 humans their treatment was tried on.
They used chemotherapy to knock out the white blood cells that were killing the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin and then injected stem cells culled from the patient’s own blood to help regenerate the Beta cells. 11 of 15 patients achieved an immediate cure.
Two more were able to stop using insulin after about a year, but one suffered a viral infection and is now back on insulin.
It’s fascinating that we now have two potential cures using completely different methods. The American/Brazilian method makes more sense in terms of the traditional understanding of Type 1 diabetes, but if the other treatment also pans out, this could really be a great time.”

Continue ReadingGood news of the week, this second week of April, 2007: The end of war and conflict is approaching.

The graph on the left is a chart of world political systems. You can see what the Cold War really meant by this graph. It wasn’t play-time, it was a major world war of ideologies. Democracy won out. Now look at the graph on the right, this is a chart of world conflicts. Look at how the two charts oppose each other. Check out that dotted vertical line, that is the Berlin Wall coming down. (it is obvious that the turning point was before this, and the wall coming down was a lagging sign of the collapse, and not the actual cause of the collapse)…
