Hot Summer for 360 Ahead!

April 17, 2007 at 2:51 pm by

Better slap a 3rd party cooler on your 360, because this is going to be a hot, hot, hot summer for the popular console.

I know, I know, “Summer Gaming?” you ask. Yeah, summer gaming. For a change. It never ceases to baffle me that game companies don’t release more games during the summer, you know, when kids don’t have any homework to do and are sitting around the house bored all day. The movie studios long figured out that this was the time to entertain, and it looks like gaming companies are about to stumble into the same realization. And the XBox 360 looks to be the main beneficiary. Let’s make a list, shall we?ImageShack

EA’s “Skate” Looks to DeThrone Tony

April 17, 2007 at 10:48 am by

[gamevideo 9695 video]

I have been a loyal fan of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater franchise, but it has been like most real relationships. It is great in the beginning, and then, the more you find out about your partner, the more you start to hate them. At some point, you can barely even remember why you ever fell in love with them. But you keep going back, looking to re-capture that initial romance.

That is, until a better-looking replacement comes along, and you get that feeling all over again. Of course, “This time, I really, REALLY love you!” And that is the feeling I get from watching gameplay footage of “Skate”, EA’s upcoming foray into the exclusive gaming world of decks, tricks, and magic lines.

The great thing about the old THPS games was just the chill feeling of roaming a landscape looking for things to grind and jump off of. Eventually, though, the series kept adding so much crap in the landscape that you could jump up with your eyes closed, hit the TRIANGLE, and know that you were going to start grinding something.…

Sorority Sluts 3: Outtakes

April 17, 2007 at 9:42 am by

[ifilm 2414541 video]

There’s something odd about our True Crime news sandwiched in with funny video clips and entertainment tid-bits. Could it be that these are the chocolate and peanut butter of emotional well-being? Does the tragedy at Virginia Tech make me seek out humor? Does an overload of humor make me want to read about or see something horrific in order to fill my head with meaningfulness? What sort of bizarre blog are we shaping up to be, the Jackass of the Internet?

If we are fucked up, then this website is going to be fucked up. Like Morbid said to me once, “I just want a website that has all of the things that *I* am interested in”. Well, I agree. And this is the sad (and funny) result.

Enjoy.…

Another professor in the Engineering, Science and Math Department who died in the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech. If you travel to the website for the ESM Department, they have a textual memoriam to both of these professors which lingers for 10 seconds before you enter the site. I think this is a lovely touch, very respectful, a way of generating silent contemplation without undue hysterics.

Seeing some faces and getting some names really puts this tragedy into perspective for me. I try to put myself in the place of these kids and faculty during the final moments of their lives, and it makes me feel hollow inside. The only weakness that a free society has is its ability to offer easy mayhem to those who wish it.

Go here to see the Memoriam that flashes up.

Liviu Librescu

April 17, 2007 at 8:10 am by

Liviu Librescu, 76, the most published professor at Virginia Tech, was amongst those killed during the massacre at Virginia Tech. He also is responsible for using his body to block the doorway to his classroom with his body, as the gunman approached, so that his students could open the windows and jump out. He was fatally shot.

Surviving students of Liviu Librescu have been sending e-mails to his wife, Marlena, detailing his heroic actions.

Librescu specialized in composite structures and aeroelasticity and was published extensively. He also received numerous awards for his work as well as several NASA grants. He also taught courses at the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, Italy, and at the Tel Aviv University in Israel. He was also a Holocaust survivor.

Final Fantasy XIII Speculation

April 17, 2007 at 7:26 am by

ImageShackBoy, various forums are going a tad crazy with Final Fantasy speculation. 360 owners are especially anxious to know, “Are we included?”. The details are tough to piece together, but what seems to have fired this off is the announcement from Square Enix that there will be SIX versions of Final Fantasy XIII: Fabula Nova Crystalis. There was a slide in the presentation which can be seen after the jump.

On the left you have the eventual product penetration of Final Fantasy VII. They are showing the movies, the spin-offs, the PSP game, the eventual PS2 game, etc. I think they were using this to demonstrate their hopes for FF XIII, and the fact that they are planning the “shotgun” approach from the start.

As you can see on the right, there are two PS3 titles planned, a Mobile (cell-phone) game planned, and THREE other IP’s in faded boxes. When questioned, they did say that other systems will be supported. If FFXIII came to the 360 it would be HUGE for that console.…

These guys are hilarious. Check our their official website. They have been putting out dirty, funny music for awhile, but now they are breaking into the video scene with their new series entitled: Cock Puppets.

Above is episode 1. I’ll be sure to update as they are released, so stay tuned. And be sure to go to their website and listen to a few more songs, especially number 3, “Handcuffed”, where they serenade the women tied up in their trunk and chained to their bed. Touching stuff.  Another video after the jump.

Of course, there is always the monster’s side of the shit-talking.  I’m sure they will milk this back and forth, and generate as much animosity between the two as they possibly can.

And whoever wins, you can bet your ass there will be a “Girl vs. Monster II:  The Dread Under the Bed”.…

GNotW: Croc Gives Man a Hand

April 16, 2007 at 4:34 pm by

www.testing.com

From the Good News of the Week desk:

Man’s arm is successfully re-attached after it was removed by a crocodile without the man’s permission. The victim, Chang, is a Taiwanese Veterinarian who was attempting to remove a tranquilizer dart from the Croc when the Croc took exception. So, it removed Chang’s hand from his elbow.

Zoo workers fired on the Croc repeatedly, recovered Chang’s hand. Both are back together and are recovering quite nicely. The Crocodile is also in fine spirits. Despite being shot at numerous times, no bullet wounds could be found on the animal after a thorough inspection.

All around, this really qualifies for the GNotW department. Nobody was hurt, and the Crocodile got his five minutes of fame. If you follow the “more” link, there is a short video about this fascinating story. And more can be read about it here.…

VT Update: 33 Dead, Another 20+ Injured

April 16, 2007 at 2:32 pm by

32 are now confirmed dead in this, the worst shooting in United States history. This is all taking place about an hour from my house, and police cars and ambulances have been seen rushing to Blacksburg to fill the void created by this horrible circumstance.

I have heard one report of a student who was in one of the classrooms the gunman entered. He claims that everyone in the room was shot and he fell to the ground and played possum among his dead and horrible wounded classmates. This type of story will be undoubtedly repeated many times over in the following weeks.

The only thing I have heard about the shooter is that he was a 20-something Asian student. It sounds like he was using two 9mm semi-automatic handguns, had a protective vest on, and lots of ammo. The crime was obviously pre-meditated as he also had chains and locks with him that he used to lock the main entrances from within the building. He then went room-to-room trying to get inside and shoot as many people as possible.…

Edward Norton is “The Incredible Hulk”

April 16, 2007 at 1:38 pm by

Christian Bale as Batman, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and now Edward Norton will be taking over the role of Bruce Banner\The Incredible Hulk in the 2008 sequel. This role was formerly played by Eric Bana in the first film adaptation directed by Ang Lee.

Marvel Studios production president Kevin Feige stated “Edward Norton is a rare talent and one of the most versatile actors in the business. His ability to transform into a particular role makes him the ideal choice to take on the character of Bruce Banner and the Hulk. Edward is perfectly suited to bring one of the most popular and important Marvel icons to the bigscreen in a new and exciting way.”

The sequel is being penned by Zak Penn (X2, X-Men: The Last Stand) and will not be as self-serious, making it more in line with the comic series and TV show. It will go back to the roots of The Hulk and detail the tortured Bruce Banner alluding authorities as he tries to discover a cure for his transformations into the green giant.…

Multiple reports are coming in of a shooting at Virginia Tech University in which 22 people have been fatally shot, one of the dead being the actual shooter. The shooting occurred at West Ambler Johnston residence hall at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, told The Associated Press that the shooting happened on the fourth floor of the dorm, one floor above her room.

CNN is reporting that three days before this incident, a bomb threat forced the cancellation of classes in three buildings on Friday. Also, the 100,000-square-foot Torgersen Hall was evacuated April 2 after police received a written bomb threat, The Roanoke Times reported.…

More 360 Woes

April 16, 2007 at 12:23 pm by

[youtube rlQYkaXv8RU video]

It has taken several months, but Microsoft has today finally fessed up to manufacturing problems with XBox 360’s manufactured in late 2006. There has been complaints and speculation online for a few months now, but it is always hard to tell if these problems are real, are just the result of a handful of loud complainers amidst millions of satisfied customers, or the exaggerations of fanboys from the other side. Because of this, it took an independent investigation by Kassa, a Dutch television show, to confirm that this is a manufacturing problem. The Video posted above is from the episode that started it all.…

Prince of Persia: The Movie

April 16, 2007 at 12:01 pm by

ImageShack

The adaptation of the popular game franchise has been in the works for awhile now. Jerry Bruckheimer has been helming the ship, and we now know who the director will be. Uwe Boll.

Okay, just kidding. Actually the long-time partnership of Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer made this one a no-brainer. Coming off of the highly anticipated “Transformers” movie adaptation, work is set to commence on the Prince of Persia film soon. The release date is slated for the Summer of 2009.

Why should anyone be excited about this movie? It is simple: Think Pirates of the Caribbean. Just as Disney used a very loose association with a theme-park ride to serve as the foundation of an original script, so too is the Prince of Persia team using the games as a general guide. The Arabian setting of Prince should make for a gorgeous backdrop for thrilling action scenes, just as the Caribbean worked for “Pirates”.…

Maryland — Peyton Duschl, 2, was severely burned after he went down the slide at an elementary school playground. Seems as if someone had previously broken into the school, stole several bottles of industrial-strength drain cleaner and then proceeded to splash it all over the playground equipment.

Peyton suffered second and third-degree burns, mostly on his legs, from the cleaner which contains a strong concentration of sulfuric acid. He was with is grandmother who heard him screaming immediately after coming down the slide. He was rushed to the pediatric burn unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was scheduled for surgery Sunday morning.

He will likely will be hospitalized for several weeks, said Carol Duschl, the boy’s mother.

Whoever is responsible probably also suffered burns, and could face charges of first-degree assault, burglary and destruction of property, said Sgt. Vickie Warehime, a county police spokeswoman. A hazardous materials team cleaned up the playground, using tens of thousands of gallons of water.

Update: Two unidentified 16-year-old boys were charged with reckless endangerment and second-degree burglary and released to their parents.…
