Janet Strickland, 64, was charged with one count each of first-degree murder and armed robbery with a firearm after her husband, William Strickland, 72, was killed in a hail of bullets in front of their home by his 19-year-old grandson, whose name is also William Strickland.
Janet Strickland, who knows about doing things the Chicago way, was not present at her bond hearing on Saturday. She was being held at a local hospital where she was being treated for lung disease and high blood pressure, according to the Chicago Tribune. Her bail was set at $500,000.
In full-on Capone mode, granny Strickland plotted with her teenage grandson, an admitted member of the Black P. Stones street gang, to kill her husband because she was “sick” of Strickland and wanted him dead, said Assistant State’s Attorney Jacqueline Kwilos.
“They discussed on numerous occasions killing the victim,” Kwilos said during the hearing.…Continue Reading
New York, NY – Philip Ward was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 1994 after he admitted to shooting his girlfriend to death in front her 11-year-old daughter, then raping the child. While incarcerated, he admitted to the 1989 murder of Veronica Bowen, his 21-year-old pregnant girlfriend found naked and headless on a Manhattan apartment rooftop.
Ward, 46, pleaded guilty to the murder on March 22 and on Friday, he was sentenced to 18 years to life in prison that will run consecutive to the sentence he is already serving.
Ward and Bowen met while in foster care as teenagers. Although they had two children, their relationship was pocked with domestic violence, leading to Bowen moving out of the apartment and leaving her children in Ward’s care. On the night she was murdered, Bowen was at Ward’s apartment to visit her children. She was six weeks pregnant and Ward said he did not believed the child was his.
After Ward talked Bowen into accompany him to the building’s roof, where they first had sex, he flew into a jealous rage.…Continue Reading
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – When police arrived at a Colorado Springs apartment to investigate a disturbance and spotted a bloody butcher knife laying on the counter, Ellyzabeth Rainey did the Peyton-Manning-like thing, and called an audible.
Holding up her two-month-old daughter, Rainey told them, “Take my baby,” court papers say. “Because I am going to run.” Then she threw the child at them, and took off.
Running didn’t work out to well, as cops caught up with her almost immediately in the complex’s courtyard, where they questioned the 19-year-old concerning her strange behavior. In an arrest affidavit, officers say she told them, “Because I just murdered someone.”
That someone turned out to be Deborah Rainey, 59, the suspect’s mother-in-law. Ellyzabeth was arrested Wednesday afternoon for her murder.
According to court documents, Deborah Rainey was in town visiting from San Francisco, staying at her son Jason’s apartment to help take care of his and Ellyzabeth’s baby. Ellyzabeth said that the couple were estranged, and planned to get divorced. Guess that’s a done-deal now.…Continue Reading
Daly City, CA – Back in 2011, we reported on 39-year-old Jesusa Tatad, the woman who poured boiling water on her sleeping ex-husband and then whacked him with a baseball bat. On Wednesday, Tatad pleaded guilty to second-degree murder after the man died from his injuries.
Tatad and her ex-husband, 36-year-old Ronnie Tatad, were still living together in 2011 after their divorce three years prior. Tatad said Ronnie had promised to re-marry her and bring their two daughters, aged 9 and 14, back from the Philippines to live with them.
But the years passed and Ronnie never re-married her and he never brought their children home. To add insult to injury, Ronnie had gotten himself a girlfriend. In retaliation, Tatad waited for Ronnie to fall asleep, then dumped a pot of boiling water on him. When Ronnie jumped up and ran to the bathroom, Tatad whacked him in the head with a baseball bat.
Ronnie ran from the apartment half-naked, and was found hiding behind a car by a maintenance worker who called 911.…Continue Reading
HUDSON, WI – Last week, Aaron Schaffhausen admitted that on July 10, 2012, he slit the throats of his three daughters, 11-year-old Amara, 8-year-old Sophie and 5-year-old Cecilia.
He is currently on trial as his attorneys try to convince a jury that he was insane at the time of the murders and not just a vindictive asshole out to hurt his ex-wife in the worst way possible.
Aaron and Jessica Schaffhausen were divorced in January 2012. Aaron relocated to North Dakota, but on the morning of the murders, Aaron texted Jessica asking if he could see his daughters. Jessica agreed, but told him she wanted him gone before she arrived home from work.
Within two hours of arriving at the home and greeting his daughters, he had slit their throats and placed each of them in their beds. He then called his ex-wife at work and informed her he’d just killed their daughters before walking into a police station covered in blood. The recording of Jessica’s 911 call was played in court.…Continue Reading
ST. PAUL, MN — Autopsy results reveal 35-year-old Stephanie Shields drowned her two children, 7-year-old Nolan and 6-year-old Josephine, before killing herself.
A family member called 911 on Easter morning to report they had found Shields and her two children dead inside their home.
Shields’s husband, National Guard member Sergeant 1st Class Mark Shields, is the father of both kids and had just recently moved out of the home.
Both children attended Zimmerman Elementary School where Principal Susan Johnston said “Josephine Shields and her brother Nolan were part of our Zimmerman Elementary School family and we are deeply saddened.”
I know there is a likelihood that Shield suffers from some kind of mental illness, as normal people just do not up and drown their kids. But whenever I hear about cases like this, I’ve always felt it was an act of vindictive spite, not an act derived from a mental breakdown.
Admittedly, my opinion is based off of ignorance as I know absolutely nothing about this woman aside from her recent actions. For all we know, she may have displayed signs of mental illness all her life.…Continue Reading
HARRISBURG, NC - On Friday, Anthony Hardy shot and killed his neighbors on either side of his home before killing himself after a police standoff.
Police say they received a 911 call from the wife of 42-year-old Daniel Thomas Kirchner, who I was informed I may have went to high school with, stating Hardy was shooting at her husband in the backyard.
“He came into my backyard and started shooting at my husband and my other neighbor,” she tells the 911 operator.
When asked what prompted the shooting, she says she does not know. She says her husband was outside working in the backyard when Hardy walked over and started shooting, hitting both her husband and another neighbor, 64-year-old Gary Wade Stocks.
When she realizes Hardy has left, she tried to perform CPR on her husband, noticing he had been shot in the stomach, but it is too late. Both he and Stocks were pronounced dead at the scene.
When police arrived, they found Hardy was back inside his home and refused to come out, leading to a police standoff in which gunfire was reportedly exchanged. When Cabarrus County SWAT team members finally made entry into Hardy’s home hours later, they found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.…Continue Reading
CHARLESTON, WV — Police in West Virginia have arrested 42-year-old Judith Kowaleski after they say she shot and killed another woman after their children fought on a school bus.
Police responding to a shooting call found Kowaleski and her aunt, Barbara Harrington, performing CPR on 42-year-old Elizabeth Slagle, who was lying in the middle of the street. Slagle was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Kowaleski told police that her child had got into an altercation with Slagle’s child on the school bus earlier, and that Slagle had called her that day upset about the incident. The two women agreed to meet at the end of the road to hash out their differences in a diplomatic, rational way – but Kowaleski admitted she brought along a handgun just in case.
The three women met at the end of the road and diplomatic discussions soon turned to arguing. According to Kowaleski, she had the gun in her hand from the time she walked out of the house until she met Slagle.…Continue Reading
CIRCLEVILLE, OH – Police have arrested two adults and two juveniles in connection to the beating death of 21-year-old Brittany Jeffers.
The details surrounding the events that proceeded the beating aren’t completely clear to me, but according to police, at least eight people took part in the beating while many others stood around and watched.
According to Jeffers’ mother, the fight began when Jeffers’ step-sister was attacked by a neighbor on Wednesday.
“That’s when my daughter Brittany said, ‘This ain’t happening,’ and she ran over to try and save [her sister],” Emily Harvey said.
Police say a crowd of people stood around and watched the fight, but no one was helping or trying to stop the women. Sometime during the fight, according to Harvey, a man blind-sided Jeffers.
“So he just came up and kicked my daughter in the head and punched her around the temple and that is when she just fell to the ground,” Harvey said. “I ran over to get to my daughter and found her unconscious, gasping for air, and she turned blue, and I called 911 to help her.”
Jeffers, the mother of a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl, was flown by medical helicopter to Grant Medical Center where she was pronounced brain dead and kept alive long enough to harvest her organs.…Continue Reading
Tallahasee, FL – Police say 22-year-old Jenna Porter scored a hole in two at the Hilaman Golf Course after using a handgun to kill her 3-year-old daughter then herself.
Golfers playing at the public golf course heard two gunshots around 5pm Tuesday and went to investigate. That’s when they found Porter and her daughter, 3-year-old Scarlett Porter, dead in a grassy area between the golf course and the apartment complex where the two lived.
The golfers called 911 and stayed with the bodies until police arrived on the scene. Police say a handgun was found at the scene and that Porter shot her daughter once in the head before turning the gun on herself.
“This is a terrible, tragic set of circumstances,” Leon County Sheriff’s Office Spokesman Lt. James McQuaig said. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to those left behind because of this tragic set of circumstances.”
One neighbor was shocked at Porter’s actions, stating that she and her daughter “seemed like normal people.”
“It made me feel sad because she is lying on the ground and there’s nothing she could do for herself … and that’s kind of shocking,” said one witness who lived at the apartments.…Continue Reading
SANTA FE, TX - Laura Lea Kolb was so angry with her boyfriend after an argument that she killed his 4-year-old daughter, according to Santa Fe police.
Kolb lived at the Santa Fe Courtyard apartments with Kevin Moore and his two young daughters from a previous relationship. After the couple got into an argument at around 3 a.m. Saturday, Moore walked out and talked to a downstairs neighbor to cool off.
Kolb also came out of the apartment but fell down some stairs. When she went back inside, police say the 36-year-old took out her frustration on Moore’s 4-year-old daughter, Taylor.
“She kept hollering ‘Kevin,’” a neighbor said. “Kevin’s like ‘I’ll be up there in a minute, I’ll be up there in a minute.’ And it was like an hour later, all the sirens come up.”
Turns out that when Moore went back in his apartment, he found that Kolb had fatally injured Taylor. He ran outside holding his daughter’s limp body and a neighbor tried to revive her, but it was too late.…Continue Reading
Springdale, AR - Here’s not one, but TWO dead babies to ruin your day. Travis Fox is accused of shaking two of his babies to death a year and a half apart.
Last Wednesday, Fox’s 7 month old baby, William, was brought to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The doctors found the injuries suspicious and Fox, 24, confessed to investigators that he violently shook the child for an extended amount of time because the child was “fussing.’”
Horrifying, sickening, enraging, but not unheard of. That’s why there’s such a thing as dontshakeyourbaby.com. But here’s where it gets mind-blowingly awful.
Investigators then found out that Travis Fox was under investigation for the September 2011 death of his 6 month old baby boy, Travis II, in another county.
In the most recent infanctide, Fox “admitted that he shook his six-month-old son for 30-45 seconds because he was ‘fussing’ . . . Mr. Fox said he was angered and tired because he was up for two days without sleep.” He also admitted drinking five beers before killing his baby.…Continue Reading
CLAY, N.Y. - David Renz, the 29-year-old man accused of killing a woman and raping her 10-year-old daughter, was beaten while in jail Friday night.
On Thursday night, Renz abducted 47-year-old Lori Bresnahan and her 10-year-old daughter as they were leaving gymnastic class at the Great Northern Mall. After he bound Bresnahan and her daughter, this piece of shit raped the little girl while her mother remained unable to do anything but listen, unable to protect her.
Afterwards, Renz drove the both victims to a rural road where the little girl got to witness Renz stab her mother to death. No one is clear how the little girl escaped from the car, but she did, and ran to the road where a passing motorist found her and summoned help.
Renz fled on foot into some nearby woods, but was quickly located and apprehended by police without a struggle. He immediately requested a lawyer and refused to answer any questions. David Renz was arrested and charged with murder, rape and kidnapping.…Continue Reading
DEFIANCE COUNTY, OH – The shooting death of a man in 2003, once considered accidental, is now being called a murder orchestrated by Judith Hawkey, a woman who prosecutors say forced her 10-year-old stepson to shoot his father to death.
On Nov. 3, 2003, police responded to an accidental shooting call at the home of Robert Breininger and his then wife, Judith Hawkey. Police would find Robert dead in a bedroom from a single gunshot wound to the head. It was claimed that the shooting was accidental and involved Breininger’s 10-year-old son.
While the death was ruled accidental, a recent investigation has prosecutors charging Hawkey with murder. Prosecutors allege Hawkey tortured and abused the 10-year-old over a three year period, and forced the boy to kill his own father.
No word on what information led to the case being re-opened a decade later, but a grand jury indicted Hawkey this month. ”The information on what caused the investigation to be reopened as a homicide is not something I can comment on publicly,” said Defiance County Prosecuting Attorney Morris Murray.…Continue Reading
Michael Boysen has been incarcerated since 2006 after being convicted of several robbery related charges. His grandparents picked him up from prison after he was released, and were taking him to their home where they had prepared a room for him to live in.
A family member became concerned when the couple would not answer their door, so their daughter was called. That’s when the bodies of 82-year-old Robert R. and his wife, 80-year-old Norma J. Taylor, were found dead inside the home.
Police believe they were killed sometime Friday night or Saturday morning. Police have not released how they died, aside from saying they were not shot.
“We are at a loss as to why he killed them,” the sheriff said. “We don’t know what the motive is.”
Detectives believe Boysen is trying to find weapons because he’d been searching the Internet for “gun shows” across the Northwest and Nevada. Boysen “is considered an extreme danger to the public and police,” the King County sheriff’s office said.…Continue Reading
WHITEFISH, MT – Gregory Rodriguez, the host of Sports Channel’s “A Rifleman’s Journal”, was shot to death by a woman’s husband, who then turned the gun on himself.
According to police Rodriguez, 43, died Thursday in the town of Whitefish after being shot by 41-year-old Wayne Bengston, who apparently didn’t like the fact that the TV personality was visiting Bengston’s wife.
Rodriguez was in Montana on business and at the home of the woman’s mother when Bengston showed up and placed Rodriguez on the end of a gun he was not accustomed to. After shooting and killing Rodriguez, Bengston beat his wife before taking their 2-year-old son to a relative’s home.
Police would find Bengston’s truck parked in his driveway and would find Bengston inside his home dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Police say they do not believe that Rodriguez’s relationship with the woman was a romantic one. She works for a firearms manufacturer and met Rodriguez, a married father of two children, at a trade show and formed a casual relationship.…Continue Reading
RIVERTON, UT – The two men arrested in connection to the murder of 15-year-old Anne Kasprzak have been set free, and the hunt for her killer(s) continues.
It’s been almost a year since Anne’s body was found in the Jordan river. She had been beaten so badly that she had to be identified by her scars, clothing and cosmetic dentistry. A search warranted described defensive wounds on Anne’s hands, and a pushed back fingernail.
She was last seen by her family the night before, after going into her bedroom to listen to music. At some point she sneaked out of the house and reported her as a runaway when her parents found she was not in her room and would not answer their calls or reply to text messages.
Before Anne left her home, she spent 30 minutes talking on her cellphone to people with unavailable phone numbers. Her family tracked the location of the Anne’s cellphone, noticing that it seemed to be moving slowly before quickening, as if she were in a moving vehicle.…Continue Reading
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Last year we reported on Steven Deuman, the Michigan man found guilty of killing his infant daughter while orally raping her. On Tuesday, he was sentenced to two life terms in prison.
For those of you who missed this horrible story, 28-year-old Steven Deuman said he found 15-week-old Evelynne Deuman on the floor bleeding from the nose, unconscious and not breathing.
Instead of calling 911 for help, he called the girl’s mother, Natasha Maitland, and told her their baby wasn’t breathing. A call to 911 was not made until after Maitland drove back home from work.
Instead of waiting for an ambulance, they attempted to drive to the hospital, but were met by responding paramedics who tried to revive Evelynne before rushing her to the hospital. But, according to prosecutors, Evelynne had been dead for far too long.
It wasn’t until later that night that Deuman allegedly whispered to Maitland that he had pulled a used condom out of their daughter’s mouth. The condom would be found underneath a diaper in the bedroom, and contained Evelynne’s DNA on the outside, and her parents’ DNA on the inside.…Continue Reading
Mexico City - Two-year-old Axel Charrette was killed in Sayulita, Mexico while on vacation with his family at a vacation home they were renting, and now his 16-year-old babysitter and her boyfriend have been charged with his murder.
In a statement released to The Watch, Jen and Randy Charrette stated they had hired a 16-year-old girl to help around their vacation home. On February 28, the girl was babysitting their two boys when she let her 17-year-old inside the home.
Realizing that her boyfriend was in a violent, drug-crazed state, she locked herself in a bathroom and left Axel outside the home and his older brother in another part of the house. For reasons unknown at this time, the boyfriend hurt Axel and then tossed him into a pool where he drowned.
They go on to say that the teen and her boyfriend have been arrested and charged with murder in Mexico City. They were also told by a source in the US State Department that the case is ‘Mexico’s number one priority right now.’
The Charrettes concluded the statement with, “There are no words to express our grief – but we wanted you to know what happened because the truth, as horrible as it may be, is important.…Continue Reading
