When Jeanette Roldan visited with relatives Monday, they thought it was strange Roldan had a toddler with her they'd never seen before.
She was baby-sitting the dark-haired girl, Roldan told them.
But when the relatives saw broadcast reports about a missing 3-year-old who'd been taken out of a Northwest Side pharmacy that afternoon -- and could see she resembled the child who was with Roldan -- they called police.
Sana Patel was recovered safely at a home near Kostner and Wellington and reunited with her family.
Roldan was charged late Tuesday with aggravated kidnapping of a child under 13. The 44-year-old Chicago woman remained in police custody late Tuesday.
Police said Roldan enticed Sana out of the CVS Pharmacy at 3311 N. Pulaski, then took her home before going to a relative's home. Both locations are within about a half-mile of the pharmacy. Along the way, Roldan stopped at a thrift store and bought Sana clothes and changed her, a source familiar with the case said.
The woman appeared to be suffering from some kind of mental problem, and her motive for taking the child was not clear, the source said. Authorities, however, do not believe the child was in any grave danger or that the woman wanted to hurt her.
Sana had been shopping with her family when she was kidnapped. A security camera showed a dark-haired woman talking with the girl and then leaving the store with her, police said.
An Avondale woman was ordered held in lieu of $750,000 bail today in the kidnapping of 3-year-old Sana Patel as her parents shopped for groceries at a Northwest Side pharmacy earlier this week.
Jeanette Roldan purchased a coat, jacket, hat, gloves, underwear, pants and a stuffed animal from a thrift store for Sana after she led the toddler away from the front of the CVS Pharmacy at 3311 N. Pulaski Monday afternoon, prosecutors said.
Roldan, who has a history of mental illness, also allegedly changed Sana's clothes at a McDonald's bathroom when she soiled her pants during the nearly seven hours the girl was separated from her family.
Sana, an only child, was reunited with her parents Monday evening. Roldan, 44, took the child to her ex-husband’s home and told him and her daughters various accounts of why she had Sana.
Roldan said that she was baby-sitting and also that she found Sana in an alley, Assistant State’s Attorney Erin Antonietti said at Roldan’s bond hearing today.
Roldan, who studied up to sophomore year in high school, suffers from diabetes and supports herself with Social Security checks and child support money, Smith said. There is a history of bipolar disorder ad manic depression in her family, Smith said before Sullivan ordered Roldan to the Cermak Hospital while she is in jail.
Interesting story, So Jaded. Kind of sad in a way, poor woman just wanted a little girl to play dolls with. Jeanettes family really need to keep a closer eye on her. The little girls parents werent doing a very good job keeping an eye on there child. She was on the video tape leaving and entering the store several times.
Am I the only sane bipolar person left on the face of the earth? I can understand wanting another child, but I would never steal one.
Na honey...they tried "she has diabetes" first...oh, that wouldn't work....let's try "she has Bipolar disorder AND Manic Depression"...well that should do it...the dumb fucks have yet to figure out that both of those diagnosis are the SAME disorder...Manic Depression being the older diagnosis for the illnes now called Bipolar Disorder....
Nah...she just plain CRAZY....
And she supports herself with Social Security Checks and CHILD SUPPORT???? I don't think at she needs to be the custodial parent if her judgement is THIS bad....
I front paged this one. I know the little girl was recovered safely, but sometimes abductions could have been prevented by, I dunno, keeping your kid with you in the store. Call me crazy. :)

Anyone else worried about the child she's collecting checks on?
