A 55-year-old Immokalee man is behind bars, accused of locking a woman inside his house, striking her with a hammer and forcing her to have sex with him.
Lauro Garcia Canales was charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment of an adult, and threatening a witness.
Collier County sheriff’s deputies were called to Canales’ small, wood-frame house and made contact with Canales, who opened the door and told them everything was fine. At that point the victim came to the door and said “I need you to help me get out of here,” reports said.
The victim, who was visibly shaking, told deputies that she had been staying with Canales for about a month, and from the beginning he would get angry and punch her. She said he locked her inside his three-room home by putting padlocks on the outside of the door and putting plywood over the windows.
The victim said that at one point during her stay Canales choked her with a tire tube and with his hands, and forced her to have sex with him. On Monday Canales struck the victim in the leg with a hammer, the Sheriff’s Office reported.
Canales took the victim’s cell phone when she attempted to call authorities.
Deputies said Canales fell asleep in the back of a patrol vehicle.
