There’s something to be said for modern slashers. That would be, most are uber generic and usually base their entire premise around finding the best way to off characters as the masked killer slices and dices through a troop of sexually-fiending teens and creepy old men. Now, I know that’s not extremely different from the slashers of the 80s, but there’s a completely different feel these days. It’s almost as if the filmmakers just want to make a film and the easiest way to do that is to put together a poorly structured story, using unlikable characters and then have them killed in gruesome ways. Now, that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the point of this rant, and that would be, Midnight Movie. This is one of the few slashers I’ve ever seen that actually kept my attention the whole time, and was actually pretty damned entertaining.
I'm a fan of the old school 80's slasher flick so it looks like I'll be checking this out.
This film definitely fits the quota for 80s slasher cheese. But, it's such a cool premise that it works for modern day audiences too. I was really surprised with this one.
I think slasher films have to be more creative and diversified to survive with a modern audience weened on more entertainment than any other generation before, so if it works now it's all the more accomplished in my book. I really want to see this!

That's the problem too many people by into a simple gimmick, like Wrestlemaniac and say it's original. No, it's not. It's a wrestler killing people. (well it's more but that's really it). At least this had a really neat supernatural element, and I almost felt bad for the cast (the only slasher I've ever felt bad for the victims was The Prowler).
I'm not speaking about simple gimmicks. I'm addressing the higher sophistication this generation demands from entertainment. I don't think gimmicks on their own have a really good track record at impressing people as far as the slasher fare is concerned. We've seen it all....so we expect more. With the increased disposable income comes an increase in consumption of entertainment media, and thus the bar to stand apart and leave impact is set much higher.
