PHILADELPHIA—A suburban Philadelphia landlord placed hidden cameras throughout his apartments and secretly videotaped female tenants for years, investigators said Monday.
Thomas Daley, 45, of Phoenixville, is accused of wiretapping, invasion of privacy and criminal use of a communications device, among other charges stemming from the police search that yielded cameras behind mirrors and in cabinets and ceiling fans, police said.
Hidden cameras and audio equipment were found in the bedrooms, bathrooms and living rooms of at least three apartments he owned in Norristown, police said. Altogether, 16 apartments have been searched or are in the process of being searched.
"He had such an elaborate system set up that when someone in the apartment would activate a light switch or a ceiling fan, he was able, via the Internet, to retrieve the video images or audio," Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Ferman said.
No cameras were found in apartments currently rented by men, she said. It was not immediately clear how many properties Daley owns.
Daley, who was arrested Friday, told police he had been making the secret recordings for about 20 years, Ferman said. Police seized a cache of videotapes and DVDs.
"Some of the tapes were the old fashioned VHS tapes, and the more recent were digital—so it clearly spans several generations of technology," Ferman told The Associated Press.
Norristown police began to investigate after a tenant found a camera in her apartment. Wires to that camera led to a recording system in the basement.
Daley was being held on $1 million cash bail. His preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 29.

HA! And people call me paranoid when, upon moving into a new place, I check for shit like that. I've been known to take the mirror off the wall in the bathroom to check for holes. Paranoid....ppfftttt!

Thomas C. Daley hiked his light-blue denim shirt up over his face as he navigated a phalanx of photographers on his way into district court. There, the 45-year-old Phoenixville resident was arraigned on more than 2,000 charges by Magisterial District Judge Francis Lawrence Jr.
Daley, who was represented by attorney Timothy Woodward, then waived his preliminary hearing on charges that include invasion of privacy and criminal use of a communications facility.
Prosecutors withdrew the two criminal complaints filed last month against Daley, replacing them with one document that added offenses related to 25 additional victims. That brings the total of victims identified in the complaint to 34 - all of whom "feel completely violated," said Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman.
"The general reaction has been horror," she said, speaking at a news conference yesterday afternoon.
Ferman said authorities believe the real number of victims is substantially higher than 34. She said that police found 32 cameras, 14 of which had audio capability, and that Daley admitted spying on his female tenants - and their guests - for 20 years.
The statute of limitations for Daley's crimes allows prosecutors to file charges dating back three years; however, Ferman said police want to talk to all victims, regardless of how long ago they lived in one of Daley's 12 apartments.
In some instances, the screws holding doorbells, towel rods, and ceiling fans were hollowed out to create "pinholes" linked to hidden cameras, she said. Daley ran lines into the basements of his apartment buildings, connecting them to DVRs; those were then connected to the Internet so he could access the footage from home, Ferman said.
No evidence exists that Daley did anything but use the material for his own gratification, Ferman said. But she added a qualification: "That aspect is still under investigation."
After the arraignment, Woodward said his client was remorseful and was accepting responsibility for his actions.
"He doesn't want to inconvenience the victims by having them come to court to testify," Woodward said of Daley's decision to forego the hearing. "If I had a crystal ball, I could see a guilty plea down the road."
I check for this kind of shit too SJ. I am beyond paranoid about that shit, that's always been my worst nightmare. I even check when (and if) I ever use a public bathroom or a dressing room too. I would feel so violated and so used, I can't even begin to comprehend how those ladies must be feeling right now.

And SoJaded, ME TOO! And when we bought our house, it had been empty for a few months. I had to inspect the walls and ceilings, etc. I thought, any perv realtor with some free time could have placed some pin-hole cameras around...
I hate public bathrooms.
